More About Freya - Surge Timer

Meet Freya, your virtual birth partner from The Positive Birth Company! Freya will coach you through every single surge with a simple breathing technique and easy visualisation. She will help you relax between surges with a mix of guided meditation, positive affirmations, gentle music and calming visualisations. Freya makes it easy for you to keep track of your surges and you can visit the log at any point to see how frequently your surges are coming and how long they are lasting. Freya will also let you know when your labour is established and when it might be a good time to contact your midwife. You will never birth alone with Freya by your side.
In hypnobirthing we refer to contractions as surges partly because it sounds nicer but also because ‘surge’ more accurately describes the sensation you’ll experience when in labour. Freya is the ONLY hypnobirthing-friendly contraction timer on the play store, designed specifically with hypnobirthing mums in mind - using appropriate terminology - but can be used by all.

You can also use Freya in pregnancy to help you relax and prepare for your birth. In fact the more you listen to the guided relaxations and positive affirmations, the more familiar they will become and the more effective the audio will be at helping you relax when it comes to birth. Positive affirmations have been proven to change the way your mind works and listening regularly will help you feel less anxious and more confident in the lead up to birth. And the more relaxed you are during birth, the more oxytocin you will produce which helps your uterus to work efficiently, making labour faster and more comfortable.

You can also use Freya post-birth any time you feel you could benefit from taking some deep breaths or need some help finding your zen. Parenting can be hard but you’ve got Freya; she’s your friend for life! In fact everything you learn through using Freya - mindfulness exercises, breathing techniques, the benefits of taking time out - are skills for life.

If you have any questions or spot any pesky bugs lurking about the place (!) please do let us know at [email protected]

WHAT YOU’LL GET:

• A timer to record your surges (also known as a contraction timer)
• Coaching audio to keep your mind focused on breathing through each surge
• A gentle expanding visualisation which you can use to breathe in sync with
• A detailed log of your surges over time, so you can track your progress through labour
• Ability to easily share the log with your birth partner, midwife or doula
• Guided relaxations, positive affirmations and soothing visuals to help keep you calm and relaxed, making birth easier, quicker and more straightforward (can also be used in pregnancy and postnatally)
• Option to share your birth story with a personalised birth announcement
• Coaching created by renowned hypnobirthing expert Siobhan Miller, founder of The Positive Birth Company
• You can skip, reorder and even remove tracks from the guided relaxation playlist, so you listen to what you want, when you want. What’s more if things begin to feel a little repetitive you can listen to your own playlist on a third party app (such a Spotify) whilst still using the Freya app to keep track of your surges and coach you through each one.
• You can switch between the 4-8 breathing pattern and the more manageable 3-6. You can also turn off the counting altogether if you prefer.

Download the ONLY hypnobirthing-friendly contraction timer on the play store and prepare to meet your baby in the best possible way, feeling calm and confident, relaxed and happy!

I am so happy to have this app! It seems really intuitive and user friendly. Having Siobhan's support through labour will be a real comfort. Having the app will avoid having to faff around with the audio downloads from the digital pack (the digital pack is amazing by the way!), and the surge timer will be reassuring. I love the fact that the app offers a choice of breathing timings for the up breathing. It seems totally slick and well thought through, which is just what I would expect from PBC!

I haven't given birth yet so I can't fully rate how it works for labour, but I've been trying to use it for braxton hicks etc. The app tracks times of contractions, but not dates, so if you track across multiple days the intervals are all wrong. You also can't pause the (5 in total) audio tracks, only turn the sound off, and it restarts the current track from the beginning when you turn it back on with no option to skip within each track. Very disappointing for a paid app.

I absolutely loved this app. Perfect for helping me keep in the zone during labour (especially when I was labouring on my own).

I will say I haven't used this in labour yet, but I am looking forward to being able to in the next few weeks :) it seems to be very user friendly, easy to navigate and a helpful way to track your contractions/surges. The main bonus of this app is having the MP3s from the online hypnobirthing course right there - you can choose which ones you want to hear, which order they come on, and you get the counting for breathing through surges as well. You can also mute or just have the music. Love it!

Its straight forward to use. However, I found the timing to be missleading! It took us a while to notice that the times between surges are inclusive of the actual surge. Which I found it Not useful. For example it was giving me 4-5 min between surges but when actually timed it separatly they were half of that....which obviously changes your view on how frequently they come on. I wouldnt use it again because of this!

This app was SO helpful throughout the labour experience from beginning all the way to birth. Really easy to use and keep track of contractions it also helped the midwives at the birth centre do their monitoring. Highly recommend to anyone giving birth however you choose to do it. Ps good noise cancelling headphones makes the experience more immersive to help you relax through the process!

Downloaded it on my Samsung and it initially opened fine. I accidentally tapped the button to time a contraction so tried to close it and it froze. It then wouldn't reopen. Restarted my phone but still wouldn't open. I just get a white screen. So have refunded and uninstalled it. Should I try re-purchasing and trying it again? Thanks for the speedy fix. I have re installed it and it is working beautifully. Love the app!

So the application is super nice, the scripts, the breathing, the surge counting will be useful during the labor. I've been listeting to the scripts since I downloaded the app, around week 24. I don't like that the music on background is lounder than the voice, I would like the option for music volume, not to close it. And what is a point for improving is that the script should not stop if I close the screen, if I block my phone. It is annoying especially if yoh are trying to fall asleep.

Perfect accompaniment to the toolbox taught on the course. Help with counting the up breath whilst having the option to listen to the MP3s that are part of the digital course pack. Can switch off individual readings and change the order they are read. Can mute the app at anytime. Surges tracker very important and love how easily the tracker can be shared if needed. Can also exit the app and it doesn't switch off!

Good app but tweaks needed. Frustrating the music louder than the voice. A music volume button is needed so it doesn't drown out affirmations. Also music off should let you hear affirmations and play your own soundtrack but it doesn't. It just stops affirmations once your music starts. Final improvement is there are only 5 affirmations. I wasnt keen on 2 so was just left with 3. Would be good to be able to download more (oak tree? Bubbles?)/ add your own. Still a good app but could be better.

Simple to use app,yet so incredibly effective. Thank you so much for designing this beautiful app.It really helped me to keep calm and focused throughout my labour. Sometimes, when I would try to count through a surge myself, I would lose it a little bit, so having the app count and the relaxing music really made all the difference. Can't rate the app highly enough. Amazing value for money. I would pay more for additional music+motivational sections. As well as a pause function. Thanks again x

Overall great app! Very happy with it, however has an issue - the audio tracks aren't pauseble, ie can't be paused. The play button (sound button) either mutes it when pressed or restarts altogether. Would be very helpful if it could be paused. Another suggestion I'd make is to be able to add your own times for surge counting as I'm finding it my breath in takes longer and breathing out take a little longer than 8 seconds too, but this one isn't essential I guess. Otherwise very good! Thank you

A great inclusive app for pregnancy relaxation and labour tracking. The app is simple and easy to navigate. It introduces the purpose of the app clearly and with a few buttons, it doesn't take long to use (excellent when simple is key in labour). The music remains the same, slow and calming. Siobhan's voice is gentle as she narrates various different relaxation tracks which compliment 'surge' measuring. Automatically, the middle button records the length of a contraction and aids breathing.

Really nice user experience. Clean interface. Intuitive and easy to use. Might only ever use this app for a couple of days but it's been worth the money. One minor gripe, in that the hand writing font is not easy for my dyslexic wife to read. Otherwise accessibility is pretty good. A nice addition might be messages for birthing partners during surges, like "hold their hand". Also triggering surges from the lock screen would be handy for saving battery while surge frequency is low.

Really easy to use. Easy to mute/switch between/remove from playlist/pause the affirmation sound tracks. I like that you can have the counting audio on, or just use the visual of the circle expanding and shrinking on screen. Clearly demonstrates when you're within the "3 in 10 min" stage that NHS refer to, without having to look at the surge detail section - it just tells you on the main screen.

I purchased the app after listening to the hypnobirthing book by Siobhan Miller and both were so instrumental in helping me preparing for and going through natural birth. The tracks on the app are great and helped me go though 2 days of labour. Totally worth the money.

Easy to use, very intuitive interface. Only used for practicing up breathing and it's very easy to delete the "surges" after.

It seems that the verbal positive affirmations stop whilst your surge timer is on, annoying as that was the main time I needed to hear them. In the end I stopped counting the surges as I needed to hear the voice through them. It also wipes the surges after labour, it would have been interesting to look at the way they progressed.

I love this app. Siobhans voice is so calming. I used the contesction timer in my previous labour and it helped a lot. Only problem is sometimes the backing music cuts out from the affirmations. Doesn't bother me when I'm just chilling in pregnancy, but during labour it would be better not to have to mess with my phone and close and reopen the app.

Glitches with audio when trying to listen. Makes it difficult to concentrate. Really wanted to like it with all the great reviews but if they aren't fixed soon will have to find something else. ***EDIT*** I was able to use it during labor and I have to say I don't think i could've had my natural Hospital birth without it. Arrived @ Hospital 8cm, didn't use it much then just focused on my down breathing. However I went to look back @ surges days later & data was gone. Very sad about that.
