More About Scale, Chord Progressions

“Pocket Composer: Your Personal Music Theory Assistant” is a tool designed for anyone with an interest in music, from professional composers to music students and enthusiasts. Built on the foundation of Berklee College of Music’s theory teachings, this app serves as your personal guide to studying music theory. Whether you’re a songwriter working on a composition or just someone who loves music, Pocket Composer is here to assist you. It’s like having a music theory class right in your pocket!
Pocket Composer provides a comprehensive dictionary of all existing chords and scales in western music for piano and stringed instruments. It now supports every stringed instrument with a fretboard, allowing you to apply any tuning to an instrument with 3 to 10 strings.

The app features a search function for stringed chords, ranging from easy to hardest to play. A reference bar helps you identify which fingering positions are easier to play.

Pocket Composer includes a compact chord progression builder. This tool helps you create progressions and songs in places where you can’t take your instrument. The beauty of this feature is its portability. Imagine you’re traveling, or in a situation where you don’t have access to your musical instrument or don’t have enough theoretical knowledge. With the chord progression builder, you can continue to create music right on your device. You can design and modify chord progressions, essentially composing music, no matter where you are. It’s like having a portable, pocket-sized music studio! This can be incredibly useful for musicians, helping them to compose and practice even when they can’t physically play their instrument.

We’ve added a new harmony tool that applies dominant and subdominant harmony functions over all existing chords. The app features a chord wheel that extends the circle of fifths functionality. This allows you to harmonize all scales and even apply harmony functions such as secondary dominant, secondary leading tones, secondary subdominant, etc. This feature helps you compose songs and learn to play chords and scales.

You can easily find out the name of a scale and the symbol of a chord by playing the instrument. You can also learn many other different chord symbols.

Main features include:

All existing piano and stringed instrument chords in western music, with their inversions and different voicings.
All existing scales in western music and many of their different names.
Extended chord Wheel and Circle of Fifths.
Compact song and chord progression builder.
Tool for applying harmony functions to any chord.
List of all available chords in scales grouped by number of notes.
Many different key notations: English, Spanish, Italian, German, Japanese, Russian, Chinese, numerical, etc.
Chord-Scale Theory to learn how to apply scales over single chords.
Chord voicings and inversions.
Scales on the staff with many different clefs.
Download Pocket Composer today and start your musical journey!"

Complicated interface. I can’t play popular progressions because I can’t find the chords even if I’m on the right scale

Looks like an absolutely fantastic app but an insanely complicated interface. 2 days and I still can't find a simple F melodic minor scale for guitar. It just loads endless data on top of endless data but not the simple thing I want. Can't see any way to reset to default and start again. So will have to delete the app and reinstall it just to get back to zero. Madness. I tried the videos. Most are in Spanish and those that are in English are narrated extremely badly by a robot.

Amazing app Premium upgrade is highly recommended if write songs or want to figure chords out and find out what works well together and what does not work together.

Wow, how can such a little app have so many features? Honestly, I felt a little scared at first. I can understand why some people might think it's complicated. But it's amazing that it has almost everything in music theory!

Too Complicated! All I wanted to do is get it to play some progressions, so I can practice improvisation along with it. Now I have to spend hours studying how to navigate this maze of technology that was clearly over-thought. I request a refund.

Simply incredible. The design is not only easy on the eyes, it looks great and helps a lot in navigation the monstrous amount of possibilities. Sure, everything can be improved, but this is amazing work and provided either (almost) free or for a very small yearly payment. Looks like there's good customer support too. Bravo 👏

I only used it for 5 mins before paying for the lifetime membership. Great app, excellent modern interface and just really intuitive design.

This app is class, you can pop your headphones in on the bus, hum a tune, and figure out chords underneath. The UI is lovely, people are annoyed that they can't get everything for free. But what is available for free is excellent.

I have no idea why people are rating this so low. It's really good. It's so much easier to make music. If you like the general set up of the free version, then buying the full app is 100% worth it for the price imo. The layout definitely takes some getting used to, but once you understand how it works you'll love it too.

Great tool, clean UI, no ads, very reasonable price to unlock advanced features. More apps should be like this.

Paid for lifetime but pretty let down, be so amazing if it didn't crash every 5 secs on my 1yr old flagship Samsung. Potential for composition & arrangement value is big esp in the convenience factor, cept for the fact that it just crashes constantly and if I try to send in a crash report it says no email client installed (i have like three) and no way to fix. I'd say use it for the chord wheel and harmony. Progressions is a net-time-loss unless crashes & frustring touch interface is fixed

Amazing app! The BEST tool for brainstorming music without having to sit down for hours trying to find the perfect chord. It really helps you find a base for what you want to write while being reletively easy to use and understand, but still allowing for more complex and creative opportunities. There are many presets for style, instruments, ect... which are insanely helpful when experimenting with different sounds. Genuinely a must have for any musician/composer, no matter what genre you play!

This app is lovely. I bought the lifetime version, please keep updating this... It's got an excellent design, very thorough and detailed, it is really teaching me more about music. And the free version never nagged me. These are all factors of a great app. The UI skin feels clean too, and overall really great, I look forward to the improvements of it.

EXCEPTIONAL, OUTSTANDING! Regarding the feature set, extremely elegant UI, and training videos, I am quite impressed. The ability to drag in the circle of fifths to change keys is VERY COOL! So many other nice touches, too. Nice example progressions also. I haven't even gotten into the settings for the various instruments. I'm basically blown away at the sheer beauty of this music arrangement and theory training app. Very well done!

I bought the lifetime version and don't regret it. It's so easy to experiment with different chords, qualities and voicings and then save something into a progression to work on later. The circle of fifths view along with the keyboard and fretboard views are particularly useful in bridging the gap between the theory and practice. It's good for training your ears too. It really cemented a lot of things for me.

Genuinely extremely happy I found this app! It's great down to the complexities! I have ONE only ONE suggestion that is a must for me to pay for it. If I could play single notes over chord progressions, I will buy this app full price, no questions asked, no refunds. Okay okay. ONE OTHER addition. If you could also add in the ability to play rhythm and chords at the same time that would be fantastic. THEN I'd pay full price.

Great developer, don't hesitate to contact them if you're having trouble. I couldn't figure out how to create a new chord progression (was tapping on the radio button next to the style name instead of the style name itself). Developer responded within minutes, sent me several emails and even created a custom video just for me. Now that it's working it seems far superior to the other chord progression apps I've tried, and appears to offer a lot more

This App is excellent, It is not complicated its just that it packs a lot of features into the current cellphone screen sizes. You can layout full song arrangements, it has midi export. One of the few Android apps I can get behind and give 5 stars. I would love to see this developer create a companion app something like ChordPolyPad so we could store and trigger chord sets.

For singer-songwriters, musiciana, student and. Those who always struggled with music theory. Pocket Composer is a game-changer! The chord dictionary and scale finder are so easy to use, and the chord progression builder helps me quickly sketch out song ideas. You will love that you can work on your music anywhere, even when you don't have your piano or guitar with you. If you're looking for a comprehensive music theory app that's actually fun to use, look no further!

I don't know what I can say. Just a brilliantly designed app. Without question, THE ONLY app any musician needs to master everything about music composition and structure. The value and quality of the information and time saved using it is literally priceless. The app is extremely intuitive and feature rich. The development team is available and responds quickly with patience and humility to help you understand or learn features and listens to your suggestions for improvements. A++ = S Tier app
