More About MTG Familiar

MTG Familiar is a powerful utility app for Magic: The Gathering.
The application includes a two-player life counter which tracks life, poison, and a history of changes.

The included die roller includes choices for D2, D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, D20, and D100.

The mana pool and spell counter can keep track of your mana effortlessly, and is especially useful for all you Storm combo players out there.

The offline card search allows you to search for any card in the game without an internet connection. You can search by:
-Name
-Type / Subtype
-Ability Text
-Color
-Power / Toughness
-Converted Mana Cost
-Set / Format
-Rarity
-Flavor Text
-Artist

You can even check a card's legality for Block, Standard, Extended, Modern, Legacy, and Vintage.

If you do have an internet connection, the app can deliver real time prices, courtesy of TCGPlayer.com, download full card images, and link you to the card's official Gatherer page.

You can compare trades with current prices in the Trade Cards screen and keep a wishlist of cards you want to trade for.

Also included is a round timer, which will run in the background no matter what you do with your Android device.

The app has searchable, linked comprehensive rules built in, so you can settle rules disputes with ease. They are also self-updating!

This app is a free, open source project released under the GPL and Creative Commons licenses. You can get the source code, or join the team here: https://code.google.com/p/mtg-familiar/

This app is ad-free, and always will be! A must-have for any Magic the Gathering player!

It does more than you expect it to, and by that almost everything you want short of letting you play. If the theory crafting and complicated interactions of cards from all across all the sets tickle your fancy as it does mine: wishlist, tradelist, deck list, card search has everything including logic operators (just found those!), color, type, subtype, text, cmc, rarity, text box, and all of that has additional search options. select different sets for your deck or for pricing reasons. 8+years<3

Great app. I've used this for years to keep in touch with friends across my nation by saving card images and sharing through preferred networks. Please make this free app somehow available on IOS, so that my friends with iPhones don't miss out on this. It's so versatile and easy to understand; I can find no other applications as flexible for all my Magic; The Gathering needs. Useful for all formats. This application has greatly increased my love and knowledge of the game.

It is a very nice app and straight forward to use, cards are up to date and so are rulings. Only problem I have which is sorta major is that each time the app updates. Which is frequently. It deletes the most recent deck I had built and put together. Any ideas or thoughts have to start over and it makes it hard when I don't remember each card by heart.

I love this app, it is a very valuable tool for deck building and just for reference. The other little tools that come with it are handy as well, like the dice and coin flip feature and saving a wish list. I can't recall ever having any problems. I love how you can sort by power, toughness and CMC. Searching by card text is wonderful. Card images look great too. I wish you could choose to swipe through your search results in either up/down or left/right. But that's just wishful thinking.

I really like this app! It's my go-to source for when I'm trying to find cards. For some reason, though, I can no longer tap and hold the images of cards to save them. It just constantly says, "Unable to save image, please try again," which a bit annoying because that's how I used to keep track of all the cards I'd come across

Best MTG app I've found. Card search works well, dice simulation and life counters, rules database, everything you need and it's pretty easy to navigate without ads. The issue is that the app won't let you save the card images at the moment. (I use this feature all the time to help me build decks.) I can't find a place to give it permission to access files/images, which I assume is why it doesn't work. Please fix. This app is 5 star worthy.

I like this app a lot, the one thing that really irritates me is the deck builder. It's very basic, lacks the neccessary tools to make a deck. Especially for commander, the saving and loading feature is very disorganized and confusing to use. You cant tell if it's been saved or not, I'd love to see a nicer, easier, way to navigate saved decks, better deck building features that includes all formats, I would almost want to compare my wants to MTG Unofficial but i dont enjoy using it since it has many issues and is no longer maintained. Aside from that I love this app. The card search and rulings is really clean and easy to acess and navigate

I used to use this app weekly, near daily. The past month or three it has become borderline unusable. Every time I open, it has to re-download every card in the database. The official app is inferior for card searches but ultimately faster at this point, unfortunately. If (hopefully when) the devs fix this problem, I'll come running back! But until then I'm finally giving up the ghost and uninstalling this app.

What used to be a flawless tool for card searches has transformed into a clunky, hard to navigate app. Why did you take out the "exact phrase" option when searching cards? And now it crashes every time I want to search ANYTHING. How the mighty have fallen. Give me back the app that I downloaded and stop messing with things that were already perfect. If it ain't broke don't fix it!

This app started out amazing, and was my go to for pretty much everything, hut the latest update broke everything. It lags like crazy, takes easily 5 minutes just to save a single image, and even then constantly makes brand new albums despite having a dedicated album already on my system, and isn't letting me view prices anymore. I wish this wasn't so, but I can't use this anymore. The only feature that continues to work are the most basic features like mana counters and dice rollers.

This app is a must have for players of all types! Easy to use and figure out. Most cards have pricing and rulings (some don't but they are far and few between), and the pricing is usually pretty accurate. Life and mana counters are a plus! The deck builder is the best part of this app. Being able to build a deck and look at the cards you're adding for price and card text is amazing. Only thing I noticed does not work is the card camera. Other than that everything is good and worth the free app!

Far and away the best mtg search engine app on the market, it would still get this rating even if the search engine was the only feature. My only gripe is the search by mana cost thing just closes the app, otherwise the minor bugs that occur sometimes don't matter. If someone is looking for cards to put in a devotion deck or X matters deck they can't search by "BB" or by "X", which is rather inefficient.

Just want to echo the other reviews. The app used to be great, really handy search parameters and I love handling trades in the trading section, among other cute side things like running momir or a life counter. Recently though, the app has to "update" the card database with the cards every single time and takes forever to do it, and sometimes doesnt get all the sets either. Once this problem is fixed, it's the best magic app out there imo

Pricing issues seem to be fixed, but with the addition of reminder text to searches, certain properties (like "can't be blocked") will now return huge numbers of search results which aren't relevant. 1/29/20 Pricing issues are back, and app is now almost non-functional for me. Galaxy Note 10 plus. Pricing issues fixed. Now the app is crashing. Galaxy 21

I've had this app since like 2013 or 2014. My go to on Android. Bug fixes are usually quickly dealt with. Edit. Recently everytime I open the app it decides to check all of the set databases to make sure there are no updates and I have to sit through while it checks all of the sets that were already up there. Like it is going in alphabetical order and I can't search for anything. Super aggravating since I usually just open the app just to find a card quickly. No fix in sight, been months

Find yourself a new database app. I've had this app on every phone for the last several years. It used to be a great database for MTG cards and constantly up to date on the new sets. Now it's straight up missing entire sets from throughout MTG's long history. Causing my friends and I to think we're crazy for thinking a card existed. And this is even after it "updates" and "adds" sets every damn time the app is opened.

I've used this app since I got into magic in 2013. However, in the last year, there has been a bug that forces an unnecessary, long, and tedious update EVERYTIME you open the app. I can only imagine either the developers know about the bug and don't care to fix it, OR the app has been abandoned. Either way, it's plainly unacceptable.

I've been using this app for years and have, in the past, convinced others to download it as well. Recently, the app wants to force a giant update every time you open the app. The update can last over a minute. Suddenly opening the app for a quick card lookup or trade is an annoying chore. Until this fixed, avoid this app like the plague.

Like many others, I had previously used this app almost daily for quick lookups and such. I don't know if it's because of the incredible deluge of MtG products or whatnot, but the app has become near unusable compared to what it used to be. Long updates of card files nearly every time I open it. Had to uninstall because it was so frustrating. 5 stars for over 10 years, changed to 1 star

Due to Google deciding that updating in the background is illegal, you have to change the auto-update frequency to be once a week or so, or turn off the auto-update feature in the app settings or it gets really annoying. Once that's turned down it's back to it's absolutely stellar performance of doing exactly what it's supposed to. It's kind of ridiculous that Google demanded the app do anything like that in the foreground, but it is what it is.
