More About SharkSmart WA

SharkSmart WA is Western Australia’s official source of shark activity information. It also includes beach safety features such as Surf Life Saving WA patrolled beaches and weather forecast, to help you plan your trip to the beach.
The app will help you switch on your Sea Sense by providing near real-time information of shark activity including current alerts and warnings. Select your favourite coastal locations and use notifications to receive relevant updates as they happen.

SharkSmart WA Features:

Map
Filter and display shark activity and beach safety features including the locations of shark monitoring receivers, beach enclosures, and Beach Emergency Numbers (BEN) signage. Explore and save your favourite coastal locations to stay up to date of recent shark activity.

Updates
Stay informed of shark activity, including current alerts and warnings. Information is prioritised into ‘Nearby’, ‘Your Favourites’ and ‘Other Locations’, giving you the most relevant information first.

Report
Using location services, the app can provide you with information about your current coastal location. Use the details provided and the quick call link to report shark sightings or whale carcasses (which are known to attract sharks) to Water Police as soon as possible.

Information within the SharkSmart WA app is designed to help you make an informed decision about your water use and take personal responsibility for your safety. Realtime information and recent sightings shown, with the ability to add favourite location perimeters- great app

Great app, but I am aware of plenty of sightings from public that I hear about days later and are not listed on app. More publicity of app could mean more sightings will be reported.

For this app to be better and reliable, we need more participation... everyone needs to get on board. Tell friends and family

Feel safer swimming being able to check where sharks have been located. I know not every shark has been tagged but like knowing some of their movement.

Useful for alerts but as a lot of shark sightings are by members of the public the type of shark is generally unknown. that's ok though.

If the intention of the app is to create unnecessary alarm in the community, I'd say it is successful. Annoying that every shark sighting is recorded. Even '1.5m unidentified species'! Maybe limit it to sharks above a certain size? Or just Whites and Tigers? Otherwise it's just fearmongering.

Not able to set viewing based on last 24 hrs. Where a shark was a week ago isn't useful.

Although not perfect Shark Smart is a very useful tool. I check it every time before I go snorkelling.

useful app. It would be nice to know also if three are patrolling teams to overlook the beaches where the sharks are spot.

Always good to know when planning a trip to the beach. The SLS helicopter sightings are particularly useful.

A better way to warn people of dangers of sharks in their swimming areas would be to set up side scanning sonars mounted to pilons that detect sharks over 1.5m in size swimming into the swimmers area. This would trigger a siren to go off that everyone can hear, so that they exit the water.Simple but effective hey.

Very handy, especially if you are looking to get away from the shore with a boat, surf ski or paddle board. Avoids nasty surprises.

The app is very good but would be awesome if there was a feature to only have the daily shark sightings to make it easier to view the current sightings.

I cant get the map to work on the app. Google maps work fine on everything else. Map works on the old sharksmart web browser.

Great v1 release 👍 . I'd love to see a single SharkSmart app that works across Australia (one day the world?). It seems like there is a great opportunity for collaboration between NSW, WA and even the public (ideally as open source on Github). Collaboration might help create a critical mass of users. Anyhow, that aside, keep up the good work!

Love the app. It's great to receive shark warnings before heading to the beach.

Excellent app. Fast, stable and easy to use. Really like the 'favourites' feature. Would be great have a pic/vid upload function -- nearly impossible to photograph sharks but have seen a few great shots from fisherman and the occasional drone pilot. Great work, thank you!

With over-reliance on "sightings" all the map reveals is which beaches are popular and patrolled. It is probably more safe to swim there than the apparently "shark free" areas, that in reality are just lacking data. Infrastructure info is useful but not needing an app.

The App is down more times than it works. The Alerts come through hours to days after the event.
