More About Wikipedia Beta

Welcome to Wikipedia Beta for Android! You can install Wikipedia Beta alongside your current version of Wikipedia for Android, so you can test our new features before they go live for all Wikipedia for Android users. Your feedback will help us fix bugs and decide what features to focus on next.
Please help us improve this app by leaving feedback here or sending a note to our mailing list, [email protected].

Features:

Explore feed: Recommended and constantly-updating Wikipedia content right on the home screen, including current events, trending articles, events on this day in history, suggested reading, and more. The feed is fully customizable — you can select the types of content you want to see, or rearrange the order in which different types of content appear.

Color themes: With a choice of Light, Dark, and Black themes, as well as text size adjustment, you can customize the app for the most comfortable reading experience.

Voice-integrated search: Easily find what you’re looking for with a prominent search bar at the top of the app, including voice-enabled search on your device.

Language support: Seamlessly switch to reading any language-supported Wikipedia, either by changing the language of the current article, or changing your preferred search language while searching.

Link previews: Tap on an article to preview it, without losing your place in what you’re currently reading. Press and hold a link to open it in a new tab, allowing you to keep reading the current article without losing your place, and switch to the new tab when you're ready.

Table of contents: swipe left on any article to bring up the table of contents, which lets you jump to article sections easily.

Reading lists: Organize the articles you browse into reading lists, which you can access even when you're offline. Create as many lists as you like, give them custom names and descriptions, and populate them with articles from any language wiki.

Syncing: Enable synchronizing reading lists to your Wikipedia account.

Image gallery: Tap on an image to view the image full-screen in high resolution, with options to swipe for browsing additional images.

Definitions from Wiktionary: Tap-and-hold to highlight a word, then tap the "Define" button to see a definition of the word from Wiktionary.

Places: See Wikipedia articles as markers on a map, whether it's around your location, or any place in the world.

If you constantly get into Wiki rabbit holes, this app is great. It allows you to save pages that will download offline for browsing. My absolute favorite feature is the pop-up view when you tap on a hyperlink that will give you a summary of the article. Great app that's only getting better.

I switched to Wikipedia Beta from Wikipedia on my android phone only because when editing an article on Wikipedia, the font on the page suddenly increases in size without prompt until there is one big character per line. I thought this would not, perhaps, happen on Wikipedia Beta, but I was so wrong—same issue on both apps—when you try to edit any article on Wikipedia with either beta or non-beta, the font will suddenly increases every 5-15 seconds to the point you cannot edit anymore.

This is really useful, you can use the beta version to read articles better than the website. The feature that strikes to me the most is how you can look the defination of an unknown word present in an article you are currently reading without jumping to other articles. The defination of the unknown words appears after you click it and you can continue reading the current article.

The dark mode is great. However, the inability to search the page (except, for some reason, when editing) is a major drawback, as is the absence of WP's Visual Editor. [EDIT:] Just found out how to force my Chrome-based Android browser to show any website in Dark Mode. (Just Google it—it's easy!) Now I needn't blind myself using WP at night—saves battery power too! So it's back to website-based WP for me, with all its features… Thanks anyway!

Wikipedia is a great encyclopedia app. I rarely give 5-stars but this app is worthy of that. The beta version is stable and works well and I haven't experienced any fatal crash. The app suits my needs as a college student and the pro is that you can get mostly stable features before anyone else. The great part is that is suits your genre and your needs and it helps us in many ways. It has articles in different languages, too. I highly recommend this app to you all and it's one of my favourites!

Great app, used it for years as an easy to use interface to read Wikipedia however it loses a star as there is no places tab (anymore?). It's present on iOS, I often use it as a passenger on long car journeys pointing out interesting features to my family, albeit often to their annoyance! Pretty sure it used to be present on Android, please can we have it (back).

Seems promising. I was hoping it would provide better curation of news (it only shows a small handful of untailored news items). It also looks like the Nearby feature is not in the app, despite it being being a promoted feature on Google Play. It's a shame since that's why I downloaded this app. It would have been a game changer for writers and journalists.

Other users saying this is better than normal wikipedia, those aren't always true. My 3 problems are that it won't let me install articles for offline, crashes often, and won't let me log in. Stick with normal wikipedia. This also isn't a phone problem as this is a new samsung phone

Continually improving, my previous issues have been fixed, the new table of contents is excellent. No way to edit whole page! Still loses your editing work if you re-open the app via icon instead of recent apps list, and you can't use other tabs while editing. Tables don't sort, making many of them useless. Only tells you storage used for articles in lists, not all the others. Would be good to browse the feed sections separately, eg. select "On this day" from the left menu or the section header.

The performance of the app is weak, different people in different locations have different internet strength and quality. If you can fix the following as soon as possible, i am using Wikipedia for my researches and the app can be very helpful: 1. The 'retry' connection needs to be auto, checking connection a few seconds 3 or less, the network i am using keeps disconnecting and loading a page is very hard. 2. Ability to turn off links on documents because text to speech fails to read linked text on pages. 3. Ability to save on an external drive card. 4. Image resize within the document or the page, may be text reflowing around the image, a tap on the image and resizing it. Clicking on the image and opening it on a second window or view waste time and money redownloading the page again when you go back to where you were reading. 5. Saving the pages temporarily so that when you are setting something or going to another page and required to come back to it you will not need to redownloading the page again, saves time. Thank you.

Wikipedia is definitely one of the best applications that is around to teach you everything you need to know about any subject😜

This beta version is wonderful . But if you want make it excellent, attach a dictionary on the drop down top left toolbar on each article. Or better still an AI chatgpt. And its on it way to perfection. I had to minimize to check FDR and CVR on airplanes, inorder to perspective to what I was reading. Excellent job. 5 star in view

I've been using this app for years and refer to it regularly--often multiple times per day. Today I gave a middling review as I noticed that some functionality I frequently used (saving an article to multiple lists) had disappeared after the last update. Mere hours later I got a response from the developer, apologizing and asking me to test the functionality again, and--sure enough--everything was back to normal. This is [once again] a great app, with very responsive developers.

Superior in nearly all aspects without sacrificing the elegant simplicity of the original. Every feature addition adds value. Tabbed mode is a welcome addition. The editing features are surprisingly intuitive. The link preview popup avoids the disruptive clunkiness found in many browser-like apps. Wikipedia stands amongst the greatest achievements of the digital age, and this app does it justice.

Absolutely amazing application for using Wikipedia on Android. I love the beta version especially because it is very functional and features a lot of cool ways to edit and browse Wikipedia in a smooth and bug-free manner with ease. I would love to see some of the more advanced tools incorporated into this app, i.e. tools from the Wikipedia Auto editor for example. However, this is not a big downside and I do not rate it any less just because I want more options. As it stands this app is great!

Best version ever! Thanks, Wikipedia, this is beautiful, with a search function that can reveal basic information, then places on the page that can open into articles or whole new websites. Beautiful colors! Please don't ever make me ever go back to plain Wikipedia ever again. I'm spoiled by the beauty of this programming (no glitches) and the beauty IN these pages.

Excellent application for using Wikipedia on Android. I especially like the beta version because it is incredibly useful and has a lot of innovative methods to modify and explore Wikipedia in a seamless and bug-free manner. I'd like to see some of the more advanced capabilities, such as those from the Wikipedia Auto editor, included into this software. However, this is not a significant disadvantage, and I do not rate it lower simply because I prefer more options. As it sits, this app is cool.
