This website takes an insane amount of money from its freelancers - twenty percent at least, and for doing little to nothing. Customer service is unimpressive and everything takes 3x longer than it should, especially getting paid. You wait nearly two weeks after the contract is completed, which is just ridiculous. I've been a top-rated member for years, but now they want to charge for Connects. It's all BS and I'm thankful for the off-site clients I've found over the years. I miss Elance.

Overall it works well except for a few things that I've noticed. The most annoying is that message notifications are really delayed. Somethimes is only 10min other times it's more. The other really annoying thing is when you get a notification that you have been invited to a job, go to notifications and, click respond, you are taken out of the app to your browser.

The app is useful for basic communication with clients, alerts(sometimes delayed) , and possibly searching for new jobs. It does take way too long to open the app though and often messages won't show up right away or even send until the app has reconnected - and it's constantly needing to reconnect. Upwork clearly doesn't spend any resources on improving it. Shame. Really would be helpful to have it work properly.

Freezes often. When scrolling through jobs, if I click on a job posting, the app will freeze for several seconds upon trying to return to the full list of current openings. It also needs to be opened and closed 2x to fully update my messages, even when I have notifications for them all. It's also 50/50 whether or not I receive notifications, which has cost me an assignment more than once. Great site and company, but this app desperately needs work, it's been like this for a while now.

The user interface on the app is clunky. The back button almost always takes you out of the app. Something occasionally causes the search results to scroll all the way to the bottom. My account was banned from upwork because I browse jobs but haven't received any recent work on the site. Seems legit. In general, if you're a freelancer looking for the occasional side gig, you won't find it here. Maintaining a good standing where you get promoted with upwork is nearly impossible.

Update: as of the last 2 updates, the app doesn't work at all. It opens to a full-page screen that demands I download the client app, then it crashes. There's no option to close or ignore the demand. This app is literally useless now. This version of the app is just a more sluggish version of the website. Prefer the old app for quickly checking and responding to messages.

Some features work well such as the ability to respond to offers and job postings. The inability to view my own profile without having to hunt through the menus is annoying. The messaging feature has not worked properly for nearly two years, on either iOS or Android. Either the notifications failed to appear (Apple) or the message thread itself was broken and does not display new messages after sending a notification (Android)

I have just completed filling out my profile, and the process was a headache. There are multiple areas that come up as an error, regardless of following the instructions. Degree & address are two off the top of my head. My address is currently listed with my city, state and zip code, followed by state and zip code again due to this error. Just sloppy. I hope the rest of the app runs more smoothly.

This app is very sluggish. On Wi-Fi or on 4G data, they're both just as slow. The messaging is really bad. It can take 1-2 minutes just to load the messages. Sometimes it won't load any recent messages, just ones from days ago. Everything else seems to work fine though. Just use the desktop version if your computer is available. Don't bother with the app until it's fixed.

The web version is a little bit better and I like all of the features in messages, like the able to save attachments from a conversation, and to keep private notes about a customer. That is great. But on both platforms it's easy to get scammed and way too hard to report a scam. And it's nearly impossible to talk to a human. You have to send one message then wait two days, and hope they answered you, otherwise you gotta wait and wait.

Messages are impossible to use on Android. Text disappears and reappears at random, the cursor cant be scrubbed through the message without deleting or rearranging text, if there is any sort of typo, good luck, the "edit" feature is nonexistent and more often than not just jumbles and destroys the entire message. I have had to resort to typing out any replies to messages on a note or blank e-mail and then copy/pasting it into the message. Uwork is shotty in general but the app is pitiful.

The app is SO SLOW. I don't know if it's an optimization issue or what, but the app is nearly impossible to use. Loading the app takes several minutes, and then even more time as you click through the tabs. Loading messages also takes forever. Another fun bug is sometimes you can't click on the job you want to view. If you can, applying for it is buggy, with some necessary sections often becoming unclickable. Some features are available in this app that weren't before, which is nice but still.

Good, but could be faster. It's convenient to be able to browse job posts and see messages from my phone, but it boots up pretty slowly. The current version of the app is significantly slower than the previous version. (My phone is a bit older, though, so that could be causing it.) For anyone getting stuck on the "download client app" screen, uninstalling and then reinstalling the app fixed that for me.

UI is not intuitive. Takes a little bit of hesitation and figuring things out to know how to save a search and then where to find that saved searched. On your applications there used to be a link to the original job posting like there is on the website. But they've taken that link away in the app. Reporting on fake jobs and spam messages is nearly impossible to do on the app. You really have to persevere.

Clean app. Not issues with use, but falls short in onr major way...no way to set parameters for distance. I travel for work, bit if I can't filter between HI, TX and FL it renders the app practically useless unless you have and hours to search 131 pages for the titled position in the area you're willing to work. Therefore, I can't rate beyond 3 stars.

I don't normally write reviews, but I figured out the glitch everyone was having, so I thought I'd share. This update shouldn't be an update at all, but a new download. I noticed two different icons on my phone. The one I had been using kept requiring me to reload it and defaulted to the old version if I opted not to, but the new icon found way in the back of my phone works perfectly. So, if you're having this problem, uninstall the old app and use the new.

So far, not good. You have to buy the units called "connect in order to apply " so after the 3 first application you are done. I applied for 3 different jobs and all 3 of them seem to be scams. They all say something about contacting them on "telegram" and includes a link that takes outside the app and its not supported by it. I would keep trying but im afraid I've run out of "connects" and im not about to spend money in something that looks so skeptic.

It would be really helpful to have a function in the chat with clients where I can just note that I've read it. WhatsApp shows blue ticks when a message is read, or alternatively it'd be great to be able to react just sending a thumbs up. It's a little inconvenient to have to reply to every single message from the client and just say "thanks, noted"

Be very careful to make sure you enter a contract. Do not chat with the clients on "telegram" or outside of the Upwork app. Do not do any work until a contract is initiated. Like any other platform it's prone to having inconsistent dealings, so protect yourself. Other than that if you are diligent it works. The UI is a bit cluttered and can be hard to find things but it is still acceptable. For their efforts to mitigate issues, I give some props.

Dark pattern ads. It seems they've introduced Fullscreen ads for their apps, which is displayed once a day (?). There's no option to disallow it, and the worse thing about it is, there's a small dot at the top left of the close button, so when you can't close it easily. Otherwise the app is fine in most cases. I'll update my review if the ad is stopped or there's an option to stop the ad. This is really unexpected from Upwork, doing something so cheap.
