I really, really wanted to love this. As a kid, playing this on a Sega Genesis was awesome! The creators of this app did a great job of recreating a nostalgic legend, but the controls make it unplayable for me. The joystick is sluggish and make any switching of directions a pain. If it had a D-pad option I think it would offer better control of motion.

The movement controls no longer work like they used to a year or so ago which makes all these games unplayable for me. Now, if you want to go let's say left, and move your finger a bit away from the controller, the player stops going left which makes you make a ton of mistakes. It used to be possible to keep the command pressed and move to the right or left of the controller as much as you want, and the command would still work, so long you have it pressed.

This game is the best way to play the classic 1991 game. There are many more features than in the og. There is the spindash. multiple playable characters. Time attack. Boss rush. So much in this product of love. But in a newer update they made switching from on and off from debug mode make the pause menu appear. Might want to fix that.

Really fun and cool to mess around with as a time killer, but what keeps it away from a 5/5 is twofold: A) In terms of playing the game with the Debug Menu, the game's pause button appears to be activating EVERY TIME I turn on and off the Debug function. Pretty annoying. B) The ads are able to be turned of with a purchase, which is helpful, but if you are restricted to doing that, couldn't the game just be $1.99 like before? Seems like shameless and pointless ad implementation for no reason, hm?

It's the same Sonic I remember from being a kid. Playing with touch controls is pretty terrible however. This isn't the fault of the game but just the lack of the tactile feel of real buttons which makes it difficult at times to be very precise or do make an action very quickly as sometimes your finger might be just far enough to the side that it's not detecting that you're holding DOWN instead of LEFT or RIGHT. If you can play with a controller, I recommend it doing so.

I used to absolutely love this port, but as the Samsung OS has been updated, this has slowly started to worsen. When I frst got this, it was free, and there were no ads. Then once they were added, the time attack mode glitched out, and then the game started running horribly. If you can fix this issue, then I may try again. Sonic 2 is MUCH better at the moment.

It's a faithful recreation of the original 1991 platformer, but it's littered with ads, it runs slow (when I'm using my phone's recorder, it runs just fine without it actually), for some reason I can't play the multiplayer, get the achievements, etc. However, it has a ton of redeeming qualities: you can play as Tails & Knuckles officially, you can turn super, elemental shields are added, it DOES only cost like $3 to get rid of the ads, etc. I'd recommend giving it a buy and playing it at least.

Sonic the Hedgehog...no, not the 2006 game, the Genesis/Mega Drive original! Before this mobile port, I could never beat the first game. Never got past Labyrinth Zone Act 3. But now with this definitive version, you can now save your progress. Thanks to that, I was finally able to beat the game! Not only that, but you can now play a Tails, Knuckles, and Sonic with Tails. There's also a Time Attack mode for those who like that. What's that? You have to be online to play the game? Not true! I disconnected from my wi-fi, launched the game, and it works normally. What? There's too many ads? True, because this game is free. If you don't want ads, just remove them for the cheap price of $1.99! What? The controls suck? In my opinion, they don't. They're tolerable. If you don't like them, then buy a controller for your phone. So in conclusion, this is the best way to play Sonic 1. The only problems are minor lag, a few glitches, and also Labyrinth Zone. EDIT: I noticed a problem in the Time Attack mode. In Spring Yard Zone Act 2 and 3, (and possibly more levels) there's a major glitch where, for no reason, Sonic dies once clearing the stage, and the time you get on the stage isn't saved. Please fix this.

Anything you'd ever want out of a Sonic 1 port. Widescreen, remastered music, an option to use the spindash from the second game, and even little details like 3D models of the game's box and cartridge, with an option to change the artwork featured on them. The only gripe I have with it is just the game itself, it can get tedious at times, but I don't really want to take that into account for my rating, since it isn't really the developers' fault here. Would strongly recommend this to Sonic fans.

This is the perfect moible port for a game like that. I'm fine with the ads and the controls. And the cool part, you can skip the ads. Yeah, you heard me, SKIP. And I really like the main menu, it looks cool. And I never played the first sonic before, AND THIS IS PERFECT! The best part are save files. Once I got a game over, it took me back to the menu, and then, I saw the first save file tell where I left off, Marble Zone Act 1. In the genisis version, it just restarts the whole game. Good job

Good port, but there's a few problems. The controls seem to have somehow gotten worse throughout updates. Sometimes the controls just stop working for a moment when I try to change direction. This doesn't happen when using a real controller. My phone has pretty wide aspect ratio. As a result, certain things pop in from the right of the screen when walking in that direction which isn't supposed to happen. It's especially noticable in Star Light Zone. Sonic 2 has the same issue.

I'm not having the ad issues some are describing; I get one ad, it clears, I continue playing. The controls can be frustrating. Since there are no physical buttons I find myself having to look down to see where the buttons are on the screen from time to time. Graphics and sound are exactly as I remember and the game flow is nice and smooth.

Good idea to bring the game to mobile. I loved the game when I was younger, but I can't play this. The game wasn't designed to be played using a joystick-like control. It needs individual buttons for directions like a keyboard has. With the current controls, Sonic's movement and abilities are difficult to control and I keep constantly inadvertently moving my finger too low, causing Sonic to roll, or making Sonic roll when I try to turn around.

Hi, I'd like to report a few bugs found in the game. First of all, the controls feel great, but every once in a while, Sonic will just randomly stop. Second, the Time Attack is nearly broken. There are only 2 acts per area instead of 3, making Scrap Brain Zone Act 3 and Special Stages impossible to play. Finally, if you hit a checkpoint in Time Attack, leave the level in Time Attack, and select it again, you will start there instead of at the beginning. In Green Hill Act 2, you can spawn about 16 seconds of the level when ya gotta go fast. The timer goes to that time still. I hope all of these bugs can be fixed soon. :)

Faithful to the Genesis/MegaDrive original but with plenty of bonus features and quality of life improvements! By far the definitive official way to play Sonic 1! The only gripe I have is that you have to be online. It makes sense for the free version (so you can't just turn off your WiFi to get rid of ads), but it does not for when you remove the ads. This isn't enough to lower my score though, as this is an issue with the Sega Forever line-up as a whole.

This is GREAT, & the port? Even better. Spindash! New modes & characters! 16:9! I understand glitches got fixed in this app. It's OK, but sometimes u just want to have fun with the unintended. When I 1st played this, definitley WAY too many ads. In fact, 1st day I got it, got stuck in an ad loop where if you pause, ad, resume, pauses again, ad again. ADS, ADS, ADS. But when I paid? GONE. There was an annoying thing where you'd get game over and it'd say "watch ad to revive". But it's gone, so 5⭐

The game is good overall, the wide-screen helps with reacting to enemies. The touch controls are far better than I could imagine (you just have to get used to them.) The ads are a bit "over the top" but I've been using this app ever since 2018 so it doesn't bother me like it used too, but I mean every time you pause you get an ad, so thats the only thing that irritates me. But yeah all fun and all good, this is a good way to play sonic 1.

Very fun and honestly just a little bit addicting. I think that, for free, it's certainly a steal despite the required internet connection. Ads are easily skippable, and the only appear in very reasonable and non-frustrating places. I think a cool feature would be the ability to cast to a smart TV, paired with the ability to use a controller it'd be pretty cool.

When I first got it, it was great. The widescreen was a welcome addition, as was the option to speed dash. The touch controls aren't great, but this was easily fixed with a USB controller and a USB OTG dongle. then a day passed, and I was unable to play at all. Whether I loaded my save or not, it would just stop and crash. Until this is fixed, and the game becomes playable again, I have to sadly give this a low rating. EDIT: fixed

Disclaimer: I bought no ads instantly before I even played a level. I do not have any experience with the free version's ads. This game is awesome. It always has been. But this version is something else. You see, it's not emulated. It is rebuilt from the ground up. Therefore it has some awesome new features. Examples include: Playing as Tails, Knuckles, and Sonic+Tails; Being in widescreen, and more! Sonic also works really well on mobile! I have not run into any problems. Highly recommend!
