PlantNet Plant Identification

More About PlantNet Plant Identification

Pl@ntNet is an application that allows you to identify plants simply by photographing them with your smartphone. Very useful when you don't have a botanist on hand! Pl@ntNet is also a great citizen science project: all the plants you photograph are collected and analysed by scientists around the world to better understand the evolution of plant biodiversity and to better preserve it.
Pl@ntNet allows you to identify and better understand all kinds of plants living in nature: flowering plants, trees, grasses, conifers, ferns, vines, wild salads or cacti. Pl@ntNet can also identify a large number of cultivated plants (in parks and gardens) but this is not its primary purpose. We especially need Pl@ntNet’s users to inventory the wild plants, those that you can observe in nature of course but also those that grow on the sidewalks of our cities or in the middle of your vegetable garden!

The more visual information you give to Pl@ntNet about the plant you are observing, the more accurate the identification will be. There are indeed many plants that look alike from afar and it is sometimes small details that distinguish two species of the same genus. Flowers, fruits and leaves are the most characteristic organs of a species and it is them that should be photographed first. But any other detail can be useful, such as thorns, buds or hair on the stem. A photograph of the whole plant (or the tree if it is one!) is also very useful information, but it is often not sufficient to allow a reliable identification.

At present Pl@ntNet makes it possible to recognize about 20,000 species. We are still a long way from the 360,000 species living on earth, but Pl@ntNet is getting richer every day thanks to the contributions of the most experienced users among you. Don't be afraid to contribute yourself! Your observation will be reviewed by the community and may one day join the photo gallery illustrating the species in the application.

The new version of Pl@ntNet released in January 2019 includes many improvements and new features:
- The ability to filter recognized species by genus or family.
- The differentiated data revision that gives more weight to users who have demonstrated the most skills (in particular the number of species observed, validated by the community).
- The re-identification of shared observations, whether yours or those of other users of the application.
- The multi-flora identification that allows you to search for the photographed plant in all the flora of the application and not only in the one you have selected. Very useful when you are not sure what flora to look for.
- The selection of your favorite floras to access them more quickly.
- The navigation at different taxonomic levels in image galleries.
- The mapping of your observations.
- Links to many factsheets.

The web version of the application is also available at the following address: https://identify.plantnet.org/

App refuses to function unless I grant access to all of my pictures and all of my video and all of my location data. cannot simply point and click and have it identify anything. cannot simply select one image from my phone to upload. it clearly wants full access to every picture, video and audio recording I have, as well as my location data. I can't imagine who they're selling it to but clearly I am the product, not the customer.

This app is unspeakably dope. To the guy who says uploading multiple photos for an individual plant ID is broken, it is not. When you click the camera button to start an ID, take the 1st picture. Then select the appropriate category (flower, leaf, seed, fruit, bark, etc) and the app will display its best guesses of species with % confidence, example photos, etc. To add more photos, click the back arrow at top left, then the "+" sign in the blank picture frame next to your previous photo, repeat

This app is great at identifying anything that grows (I kinda want to try it on a couple of my kids...!). Very accurate, speedy, and unlike all the other similar apps I've tried, it does NOT nag you or require payment. To the point I'd actually consider a paid version, since they have given me the opportunity to experience how good the free app is.

Love this app. I use it very often to identify unknown species of all types of plants and weeds. Interface is straightforward and results are usually 100% correct. It also allows you to identify a pic, then go back and add more different ones to aid in the ID (bark, leaves, flower, fruit, etc). You can even submit for verification by others in the community as well as get scientific name and facts.

I absolutely love this app!! I use it all the time! I enjoy hiking and often find plants that I've never seen before...this app is perfect for that! I simply take a picture of the plant, upload it to PlantNet, view pics that are closest in shape/size, etc and pick the one I THINK it is! Others review my selection and let me know if I'm correct! Plus there's TONS of info on each plant! Seriously, this app is so helpful...once you learn HOW to use it!

The absolute best app for amateurs trying to learn botany. I am constantly amazed by how well it is able identify species. I use it for foraging, selective weeding, and flower identification. Some people may struggle if they don't use it correctly, but as long as you take a clear picture that includes as much of the plant as possible (or typically an arm sized piece for larger plants), you'll get an ID just about every time.

I gave 2 stars because of the well disgned UI. Out of the 4 plants (2 trees and 2 vines) I've tried to identify, it did not get any of them correct. After taking several photos of different leaves in different light and pictures of the bark it still was not able to identify correctly. It also takes a while to upload and get a result on wifi or 5g. It seems to pause if you lock your phone or run the app in the background, so you can't use your phone for anything else while the app works.

Very good identification app. Important to know that the database is built on user submitted photos and identification, but with a decent photo it seems to be fairly accurate. *UPDATE: while everything above is true, there's an issue trying to upload multiple photos of the same plant to more accurately id it. this makes the app fairly inaccurate. I don't know if this is on purpose or a bug, but it needs to be fixed to get a better rating*

It's accurate 90% of the time. My only issue is when I'm trying to figure out exactly what type of dracanae I'm looking it. It'll almost always say it's a mass cane when it looks more like a Janet Craig, so it's not super super specific, but it's specific enough when I come across something I've never seen before. Despite it being free to use, I don't get bombarded with ads left and right like basically any other free app.

Great! Although challenging to navigate to the different options, but then I'm not technically inclined, will probably become easier the more I use the app. For years I see plants and wonder what they are, this app is pretty amazing. Plus my pictures are saved, so I can go back and review what the plant was. Love that you can link directly to Wikipedia.

Very accurate and versatile. Probably as close to perfect as it is possible to be. To get more accurate results, you need to learn to use the app and make sure you try several different photos and when uncertain get both bark and leaves or fruit/flowers). Very, very impressive. The app learns and gets better the more people use it but it is already amazingly accurate.

Useful. It would be great if users could view their plants grouped/filtered by the location they entered. And see their location and notes along with each plant in the list without having to click into details. Also, the way to add additional images is a bit difficult to find (scroll all the way down), and for past plant searches there doesn't seem to be any way to add another image when redoing the search.

Application wants access to camera, files, location and storage just to take a picture, and identify the plant I am trying to identify. Too much. We've used apps to help identify bugs, spiders and frogs which give immediate results. All this app does is take the picture and stores it without any explanation as to what it will do next. I tried 4 other similar apps with the same zero answer.

Cute idea, but not accurate, pics are not vetted by experts. For example, for oak & maple trees in New England most of the user uploaded pictures are for the wrong tree. Identifying oaks/maples is tricky because the leaves are close in shape/color. This makes the app useless for identification. There does not appear to be a way to flag incorrect info. On the other hand, for some other plants, the app points me in a direction and then I can use expert vetted resources to identify the plant.

Came back to change my review. Apparently they were having some technical issues last week, which is okay, it happens. Even though I had already identified my plant, I re installed to test it out, and it worked great. It identified my plant quickly, and the app is easy to use. Also, they don't go crazy with the invasive ads like the other app I tried. I'll be using this one as opposed to the other one now. Thanks guys!

Been using this app for at least a year and all of a sudden it doesn't want to work anymore. Phone and app are all updated. Keeps giving me "technical difficulty" pop-ups and I can't even access plants/photos I've already identified, let alone ID new ones. Was a fine app and I liked the direct link to the plant's wiki but now it just doesn't work at all! :(

Works hot and cold,. Difficult to figure out how to navigate the many interfaces. Amending initial rating: what have you done?? It's impossible to get back to main screen w/ options of camera and Gallery. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to getting to the various screens I don't want to see every Tom , Dick and Harry's photos. I want my photos and pertinent ID info. I even uninstalled it and reinstalled hoping to clear the bugginess of it all. Down rating it which is a shame b/c it used to be very good. A Royal Pain in the " "

Solved my mystery plant problem quickly and accurately. Pleasantly, surprised. edit: app seems broken. says to switch location to western europe. 1: I'm in the United states. 2: There is no option to change my location. I know you will say to turn on GPS but that's never going to happen. I adjusted my rating until fixed. Would have been one star but this app was good in the past.

To preface this review, PLEASE, TAKE MULTIPLE PHOTOS! (So many users take only a single low quality photo. Multiple photos make identification so much easier, especially when they are of different parts.) While not perfect at identifying plants by itself, the app is great for providing a starting point for identification. The in-app information is very helpful. Botany is an inexact science, you need lots of info for identification, and some work on your part to ID something correctly.

App was working very well, now it gets stuck at the "sending pictures" phase. Haven't used it for some time, now It's no longer functional. Will change rating to 5 stars once this gets fixed. Update:Great app, was very handy identifying many plants. You still have to find the perfect match to your plant through the list but that is mostly fine. Thanks for being responsive and for fixing the issue!
