I purchased the premium service. It has been working okay most of the time. My only complaint is that every time I open the app, the screen pops up giving me the option to upgrade to the premium service I already have, and it is the reason for only 3 stars. *Update 4/19/21: worse than ever. Now, the problem is constant with ads that block the screen. Downgrade to 1 star. Warning: DON'T PAY FOR PREMIUM. *Update 6/4/21 Still no fix. I guess they do not intend to fix it. Subscription cancelled.

This app does contain a dictionary. After turning off multiple daily notifications you can get it to exist unobtrusively like any other tool app, but it's incredibly pushy for an app that's like the literary equivalent of a calculator. The word of the day isn't ever useful, just words you use regularly. The real problem with this app is the ads. After you close the 3rd ad pop-up after each word there's a banner ad you can click to download a paid version. ***THIS APP IS VIRTUALLY UNUSABLE***

I enter a word in the search and the "Searching" circle spins indefinitely. "Word of the day" (which I don't want anyway) spins indefinitely. Too many links to other places/things that have nothing to do with my desire to simply find a definition of a word! I love the real Oxford Dictionary. I don't know what this thing is but it's a time waster as presented here.

This is NOT a free dictionary as it is described! Even the fine print in the agreements (yes I read all of them) doesn't mention that it's not a for free service. It's not until you've installed it read the agreements and then hit start that you find out there's a three-day trial and thena renewal fee of $19. 99 unless you give them 24 hours notice of the intend to cancel. Beware!

This was a great dictionary tool. I started using it for the definitions and the etymologys. Word of the day too. I liked it so much I paid a little over $5 for it a couple years ago. I thought that was supposed to support the app, keep me free of ads, and support the offline dictionary. Apparently my payment has lost its value, because now I'm getting hit with Temu ads every time I open The app. Usually when apps go to ads they grandfather in those who paid. This doesn't bode well.

I am amazed by the BORING list of reviews calling this outstanding app "boring". The OED app is, for me, exciting. Yes, I am weird, but I enjoy the extra treat of learning the etymology of the word I am looking up. Well worth the extra cost. I have had the OED on my phone since the flip-phone days, and it's usually been the first app I've installed on every new one.

Agreed with other top reviewers. There are too much advertisements that are distracting and time consuming. Asking to upgrade to premium ever time I open the app or search a word is truly very distracting and obnoxious. Otherwise, the contents are great and easy to read/understand. Sadly, I had to uninstall and replace it with other dictionary app a month later.

My app experience was nothing like the sample pictures. I searched one word and was immediately shown a poorly-scaled video ad that was, frankly, offensive. After the waiting the allotted time and closing the advertisement, the provided definition did not even make clear the division of the syllables in the word, which is one of the main reasons I use a dictionary app. Above the definition appeared a bright banner, which said I used up one of my two free definitions and prompted me to upgrade.

The quality of the Oxford English dictionary is of course well known, but without the full version you will see ads every 5 or so words. If you're not an avid dictionary reader like me that's probably fine, but I couldn't stand it (bought full). One marked issue I have is that the "Word of the Day" is completely random. There is no thoughtfulness behind the words chosen (as on the official website, which actually has its own distinct WotD), and you can get random words yourself a number of ways.

The number of ads the free version has is ridiculous. I understand that a free service must have ads, but displaying an ad nearly everytime I search for a word is obnoxious. Plus the entry pages could be easier to read and lag when scrolling. $20 a year isn't much but even that is top much to ask for this app. On the plus side the definitions are clear and concise.

Well it's a renowned English dictionary. Not a bad thing at all. But I give it heavy marks off on account of the app refusing basic functionality without permissions for access to storage and camera. Furthermore, the app has a prominent feature to rate it directly from the app. But it only gives you the choice of either not raining at all or giving it five stars. Boo.

Overall a really good app. I use it regularly and love that it can be used offline if you choose to download a dictionary. I also use the pronunciation feature. Excited that they just updated the UI and added access to more dictionaries to my purchase. Would like more detailed etymologies but I realize that's outside the scope of what I paid for. Was tempted to dock 1 star for only having a random instead of curated word of the day, but I don't think that's enough to amount to a whole star.

To many options. Example: affect(1), affect(2), or affect(3). I want affect(1,2,&3) in one option. I like the files, but they are no good to me if I have to add three words to get what I want instead of just one. Who wants to click, look, back up, click, look, back up, etc. just to find what thay want. I'd rather click, look, scroll, 💡!. Also be good if you added a spot for things like homophones instead of only nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc..

I really love your oxford Russian-English dictionary, and I'd have no problem buying this app, but it looks like there's only a subscribe button. I know that subscriptions mean more consistent income, but I hate ads, and I hate "poking holes" in the bottom of my already thin wallet. I'd much prefer to pay once up-front for a version now and pay for an updated edition in the future. Please let me know if I'm missing a non-subscription option!

The Oxford application had a free version, fast and user-friendly. I happily used it daily, for years. Now it is a disaster, a perverse business model. The "free version" is so crippled it is virtually unusable. Ads obscure the entire page, difficult to delete. No toggling between the two languages. Freezes quickly. FORCES high-priced subscription. There are many dictionary apps that function well and fairly. Forget Oxford. Tragically, it has been corrupted by corporate greed. How sad.

Whenever the dictionary would update, all of the words in my favorites list would link to the wrong word. This happened to me twice. First time, I reported the issue and contacted support. They couldn't fix it, so I just went one by one and fixed each word. It just happened again, and now I have nearly 200 words in my list, and chose to uninstall instead of wasting my time knowing it will probably happen again. That being said, the dictionary itself is good.

Response: I know it's difficult to maintain a reliable dictionary, but you too should be aware of the market around you. Try staying up to date, maybe change how the business runs. Its either ads or subscription, but your app is useless without a subscription yet somehow still contains ads. Worse off is the functionality hasn't changed much since the first time I used it back in 2014. With time, you might only be left with older customers unaware of better deals, no new ones.

The app is great... BUT... email verification does not function at all. No verification emails are delivered when you create an account. Then, you can't use the app on a second device because the app informs you that you haven't verified your email. Infuriating. Furthermore, the "forgot password" functionality suffers the same fate of no emails being delivered. It's impossible to reset your password if you never receive the reset password email.

There are so many ads you can barely navigate the app. Every time you do something a new ad pops up blocking everything and they are so annoying to close out all the time. I just deleted the app and am trying another dictionary app. Why should I have to pay for your app when there are plenty of free apps that don't overwhelm you with ads every two seconds. That's a lame response.
