I think the overall access to news and information is good and I like it. However I been very annoyed by the sliding controls. I hate it. You cannot easily go up and down on the main screen without jumping sideways to earthquake/tsunami screens. Can you not disable that option or at the very least make it optional. It may work fine for some devices but on my phone is very annoying.

Design flaw on Android, but other than that, good representation of NHK content. On my Samsung S10 (and on any Android) it is way too twitchy. When I try to scroll down to view more content, 80% of the time, the app swipes left or right (to the earthquake info tab). Obviously this is not what I intended to do. It's super annoying.

Like other reviewers, I think the NHK news content is really fantastic, but unfortunately the app is broken on Android. Scrolling up/down is "sticky" and difficult, and often accidentally scrolls to the right (to the Earthquake tab). It makes it difficult to actually read the articles, as trying to scroll often incorrectly moves to another tab. It's a shame, as the app is basically not usable on my phone (Pixel 4a).

1) The app won't work if it's not the active window. Please allow me to lock my screen and still hear audio. 2) The low quality option is missing. It seems the app automatically detects bandwidth and choses for me. This causes connection errors for a while. Please put quality choices back 3) please add an option for audio only 4) there are many connection errors during playback. Please fix! I used to love this app

* EACH time I start the app, it asks which language am I using. It never remembers even though I click on the save button. * The NHK app CAN NOT be opened in Multi-Window mode, so you can't watch NHK while using any another app! * While playing the live news in portrait mode, the video fails to remain on-screen as you scroll the tv guide below. * Pausing live tv mode doesn't resume the live show from that point, so you miss what was in between.

App fails if you click on a headline more than 4 down the list. Not really very useful. This is too bad as I liked being able to see the world through the Japanese mindset. I hope it gets fixed soon. According to the Android notification, there's a bug in the app. Android 12. Samsung S21 5G. Verizon.

First off, unlike many apps, this one actually works and does what it says it does. Secondly, the programming is terrific, and there are no stupid restrictions on viewing. Not all programs are available "on-demand", but most are. Good perspective on news you won't get off U.S. stations, cooking shows, Sumo highlights, and general introduction to Japanese language and culture. I'll say it again, terrific.

I love NHK and older apps were really great, however recent updates have lead to a drastic decrease in image quality. Clearly the data rate has been strangulated to a point where the image is now low res, grainy and often with artefacts, and this even on a very fast, reliable connection on which every other service can easily deliver HD1080 or even 4K. And this has been the case on all platforms not just Android. Is this how NHK wants to represent Japan to the world? What a shame.

The newest update has broken Google Cast functionality for on-demand video. Only radio and live feed work anymore. Sumo videos just play on my phone. For those wondering how to get to live video feed - press the red button at the lower-right of the app, then press "Live." If you're already casting, it should switch from radio to TV. Google Pixel 3, latest version of Android.

I like this app because I can get news of Japan weather, watch programs for history, culture, pop culture, anime and gaming. I just wish I had the option of downloading videos and clips so when I am offline or out of range I can continue to watch my shows without interruptions. I hope the NHK app improves on this and thinks out its connections issues for its viewers sakes.

Edit on May 13, 2020: Chromecast works for "on demand" videos! v. 8.1.0 corrects the Chromecast problem. Thank you so much NHK. 5 stars. --- (Old review follows) The latest update does not Chromecast. Which keeps the family from enjoying our evening Japanfest. The live feed will cast but the on-demand programs will not. They only play on my phone.

The app has been good for the most part since downloading a while ago, but recently the scrolling has become broken. Just scrolling through an article will cause the tab to switch over to the Earthquake page, even when I'm seemingly only scrolling up-down. The app has good information, but not being able to read articles has made it borderline broken.

I love this program. Very educational. But the old version was quicker and more derrect, with the same choices searches. Meaning, You first open the app. It puts you to live TV. A few seconds deference. You turn on your TV, Your cell phone, lab top, are all on the same Channel. Till you choose otherwise. Almost watching the same program. Now you have to fuss with it. I use to watch on the go. Not any more. I just have to wait till I get home. Still like it. But miss the old version. ✌🤓👍

Good news app, but the interface is very poor and makes it almost unusable. When you try to scroll down the page, it will often switch to the next tab, instead of scrolling down. This needs to be corrected, it's way too sensitive! (Copy how the Facebook app works, they have this figured out!)

Good writing and journalism. The app gets only two stars because of the UX: it's hard to scroll down. While reading an article, any side movement switches over to the earthquake or tsunami panel, away from the news panel. This makes it really hard to read, and it's something that can be fixed easily.

The program alerts no longer work. Also, if a live program is being repeated (indicated by the red PLAY button over the image) you CANNOT set a program alarm for it. I also want to echo Thomas R.'s and several other users reviews: The app screens are too sensitive to any horizontal vector when the user scrolls down, and constantly switch to the UNdesired screen, i.e. from TV to RADIO. Its no longer fun to use this app.

My favorite app for many years, but after installing it on my new phone, it fails to go any further after selecting the level of cookies. I've tried again later many times as directed and installed it twice which doesn't work to open the app. Luckily, I can still watch NHK World on PBS but please offer an app fix. Edit: After a few days of trying to open the app, it finally works great again through the developers efforts or my phone getting up to speed. Thank you! Upgraded to ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️😎👍

I have always loved this app, however, with the last update, I'm unable to cast programs to my Sony TV. PS update, the app now "casts" whatever it chooses (mostly the radio news update), but Im unable to cast the video I choose. I have to initiate the cast tab, then I open the onDemand panel, choose a program, but the app doesn't place a priority on my choices... It continues to cast the previous show. No cast initiation button is available in the "onDemand" area. Thanks

I absolutely love NHK news and their shows. However, since their update a few months ago, I'm unable to cast to my TV via Chromcast, which is so unfortunate. I would be watching so much more if I was still able to cast. My initial review before the change would be absolutely 5 stars. But since the update, I can only give 2. I can't watch as often, because without the chromecast feature, my battery on my phone drains substantially faster than with casting. Please fix so we can cast again!

New version has closed captioning on by default for live broadcast with no apparent way to turn it off. Please add a switch to settings. Thanks. Also, captioning is way behind video which makes it that much more disruptive and annoying. When I switch to view NHK live broadcast in browser, it is OK. No closed captioning in browser view. Just a problem in the Android app.
