I stepped away for a bit and came back to pick my foreign language back up. Instead of lessons that flow into each other they seem to randomly pick new topics, then have you chat with a bot on a topic that has nothing to do anything you've been learning. Also, if I select "Learn Scenario" from the home page, it errors out. And when I go thr scenarios page, that one has moved past, as though I already did it. The effect is you feel like you're spinning your wheels instead of making progress.

Really easy and fun. Thanks to Memrise I've learned so many new words I feel like I'm actually making progress. Update:2024 9 years later and I have to change my review. I've seen this app go from affordable to ridiculous. I accidentally hit they sync button and updated to the newest version. I had multiple lessons that I was done with and or nearly done with. I lost all my original progress and now it wants me to pay, I can't even review what I had done in the past. What a sell out.

Sorry to have to change my rating, but I paid for being able to use the app for the community lessons even though I knew I didn't have to. I am learning Thai that does not have the advanced courses now needed to use the app and will have to use a web based site. That wouldn't be so bad if the audio worked right, but it cuts out the end of most sentences both on the computer (Firefox, Edge). I really liked this app.

FURTHER FEEDBACK: I loved the former structure of multiple learning options/styles. Videos were of people on the streets—great! Now, ugh. & I lost all my history. UPDATE: The old 5-star version seems to have been replaced with annoying videos only. DISAPPOINTING! Canceling my subscription. FIRST REVIEW: Fun, effective way to learn European Portuguese, differs from Brazilian. Multiple learning/teaching styles deeply reinforce vocabulary and grammar, and help form language patterns quickly.

When I downloaded this app at the beginning of the year, it was phenomenal! I felt like I had finally found the hidden gem of language learning software. It updated automatically in February to a new and illogical version. They've intentionally removed all of the community generated languages from the app, so all my progress was lost. They did not notify me of any upcoming changes at all. Just decided to render hundreds and thousands of learners 'expelled,' so to speak, from the app.

I got a paid subscription to Memrise because it used to be perfect for advanced learners with specific weak points to work on. However, it has now become rigid, requiring learners to follow a set pathway with no flexibility. It might work well for beginners, but it's no good for independent learners. What's worse, I can't get a refund for my annual subscription, despite the fact the app has completely changed. If you do subscribe, beware - they might change the app completely with little notice.

The classic version of memrise was invaluable to me for a critical part of my life ten years ago. Everything that made it great is being destroyed by the forced changes (and removal of Community Courses) in 2024. I would pay for the original product from 2016. You couldn't even pay me enough to use the current product. Congratulations on forcing changes that lost you a customer.

I came back to edit my review b/c Memrise updated. The memrise Ai bot is nice, but the conversations are much too advanced compared to what the student knows. Something is broken here. I just did a session and it gave me a couple questions on the sounds of letters. (The most basic questions, below my level.) And then it suggests, "we've put the words you just practiced into AI Membot for a conversation", and it's about "getting biology notes for a sick friend". Far far too complex for my level.

Good for beginners. Not good for anyone else. It could be so much better if you could skip past the stuff you know or if there were levels. Also, I find it odd that the AI chats use lots advanced words given that none of the words are taught in the lessons.

Requires an account to try, dont know if the app is any good as there is no trial or demo of the app before you make an account. There are other language learning apps (like mondly) that allow you to try it first or have a local save that does not require an account. If this app was good and I just didnt learn well with it it would be given a high score, but having to make an account just to delete it if it doesnt work for my learning style is time I don't have to waste.

Advertising became intrusive overnight!!! Automatically plays video advertisements with audio. Ruined the app. (Was 5 stars.) Then I bought a subscription to eliminate adds, found out the app changed and removed picture memes, asked for a refund, have gotten nothing but the run around. Feel like I've been robbed! 12/29/23 Terrible app. Not only did they NOT refund my money after several email attempts, they just RECHARGED me for next year!! Incredibly sketchy. I'm furious! Worse today than ever!

Great for many languages but do not recommend if you're learning Portuguese from Brazil. The Brazilian Portuguese Course uses AI Avatars instead of real people which just feels lazy. I've checked and on Chinese, German, French, European Portuguese, and both European and Mexican Spanish they have actual videos of natives speaking, while BR-PT just uses random photos with an AI filter to make it look like the mouth is moving. Please show the same amount of care as you do with your other courses.

Logged in after a long absence to find my courses have moved to the website. Fine, no worries. But when I "learn more" I'm taken to the site and get stuck in a loop between learning more and being told my courses have moved. No obvious way to *actually* access them (even tho it says I can). Tried entering thru the login and same difficulty. Would be happy to explore other courses (not the "community courses") as well, but completely blocked from even accessing the app.

Great app, love how they have native speakers talking and not just a fake computer voice, but the new update needs improvements! While I am going through a scenario it constantly has the 'next for you' pop up for something else, even when I have not completed the scenario! Please make an option so we can opt out of the 'next up for you' widget!!

I've been using Memrise for nearly a decade, and it used to be my absolute favorite app - I would recommend it to everyone I knew who wanted to learn a language. But over the years they've gradually made it worse, to the point where the free version seems all but useless now, with most content locked behind paywalls. How sad to see greed slowly eat away at a wonderful product and strip away everything that made it great.

Update: I miss the old version of memrise. It has become much less enjoyable and sometimes a bit of a pain to be in. The chatbot is way too advanced for me as a beginner. It uses words and concepts they haven't yet taught, which is highly discouraging since the app is constantly pushing me into the unusable (for my level) chatbot. I miss the cute videos of natives saying the phrases. It made the app feel more human/connected and made it fun for me.

Overall, memrise is fantastic learning software. The pacing is good. They give you literal translations, which really helps you understand the language. They also have recordings of locals speaking so you can develop an ear for the language. I will say, I'm not a fan of the speed review, but there's no penalty for skipping it, but there is an option to reduce the amount of words you do in a session, more than 10 can get stressful.

The app literally won't let me in anymore. As soon as I open it, it tells me my courses have been moved. Fine, w/e, I just want to check out what they're offering now, the official Memrise courses. But no, there's literally only one place on the entire screen to click and that's to "learn more" about my courses being moved. There's no "x", no "proceed to the new Memrise", nothing. Uninstalling doesn't work, pressing the back button doesn't work; guess they don't want us to use their app at all!

12/22/23 the new format is absolutely rubbish. There is no way to do flashcards, practice without the sound on, video playing. I used to do my memrise flashcards, speed rounds between meetings and the like and then work on pronunciation etc when I had quiet. There's no way to access classic mode on my phone. I will not be renewing my subscription. Old: 6/3/20 (4star) Wonderful. Helped me learn Portuguese Portuguese for a trip. All other apps only offer Brazilian Portuguese.

I agree with what most other users say about the changes and removing the short clips of people pronouncing the words/ sentences. That was the whole reason I got this app to begin with. I know we still hear it, but the videos made it a bit more personable. I also keep getting the same two videos in the daily practice videos, it's really annoying. I know I can chose other videos but if you changed the format, make it work.
