On the very first day I had like 10 people send me messages to welcome me and to start chatting. This has been one of the most valuable resources for my 中文 learning that I've used so far. The ability to send voice recordings is wonderful too, because I'm very busy and can rarely join a voice call. The UI is easy to navigate and works well. Lots of extra learning content. Highly recommend!

I just hopped back on after a year off this app and was very excited...until I found out that this once-beloved app had made so many changes, it's nearly unrecognizable from the intuitive, simple, functional app it once was. Paywalls are fine, I get it, I'm willing to pay for good apps that are well executed. But this is not that, not anymore. Bummed, but I guess it's off to find a simpler app, or just find language buddies the old fashioned way through Meetup, Craigslist, or whatever.

The app is almost perfect except for one ongoing flaw that all the users know about, and it has been persisting for years. New texts in conversations do not appear for extended periods of time and sometimes never unless you are actively using the app and maybe refreshing constantly. If they would fix this problem, it would be a super app. I'm a paid user btw.

This app is great for meeting new people to exchange languages. The translation and proofreading functions work well. I've met a lot of interesting people via the app. They radically increased the cost of VIP awhile ago and took it away from people who had previously purchased it. It's a bad feeling, especially since they've put so many features behind the VIP purchase. :(

A really great app for connecting with native speakers of your target language. I have been using this for months and it doesn't really have any draw backs. Just like on any social platform, weird and untrustworthy people will message you, but you can just report and block them. I really love this app, it is so helpful in learning laguages, and even has it's own classes you can take (even ones with live teachers). You can easily use it for free, or pay extra for a few additional features.

Very helpful app for language learning. There are two main issues I keep running into that make me give it only 3 stars. Half of the time, my text/voice messages don't get sent. They hang for 20 seconds and then I see a red exclamation mark next to them. I have to try resending several times before they finally go through. The second is that my screen can time out while listening to or recording audio, which stops the recording/playback.

I really like the concept - it makes it super easy to learn from native speakers (the best way!). I really don't like how the app limits how much you can translate, and I have to either pay, or take an extra step and use Google/Microsoft. You can't even just remove the translate button; each time I tap a message instead of holding it, I'm presented with an ad to pay for the app. It calls itself free to communicate, but it's not as free as it sounds.

As a conversation practice resource, the people behind HelloTalk had a pretty good idea. I've been using this app since 2017, and I've made some really good friends who not only help me practice speaking, but also answer my grammar questions and even edit my essays (most people won't do this, so don't get your hopes up). BUT, ideas don't always translate to reality. Tech-wise, HT is lacking. I always forgave it because I thought, oh, maybe it's really slow because the app is too big and my cheap phone can't handle it. And maybe images don't load when I'm on Wi-Fi because our Wi-Fi is just bad (even though it works fine with literally everything else.) But at this point I've updated phones three times and our Wi-Fi is 5g. I'm done making excuses HT. Get yourself together and focus on making sure the basic functionality of the app works as it should before developing more useless features that you're just gonna hide behind a paywall. At this point, the only reason my friends and I haven't switched to Discord is because the text-to-speech feature is really helpful😭

While this is a nice app for regular language partner use in a variety of languages, there is a MAJOR issue regarding synchronizing with the web version. Messages regularly delete themselves, and are wiped from the phone and the computer, despite being normal conversation that does that violate any rules. It's purely a matter of synchronizing messages, which fails more often than not. Makes keeping track of conversations incredibly frustrating. Both phone and computer connections are good.

One of the best apps to learn and meet people, major problem here though is when you make a mistake posting stuff you can't edit, which is frustrating. Either copy and paste then fix or use the correction tab but that's a waste, a simple edit button will make things tremendously smoother. Also talking using the voice feature can drop at times, not too bad but after a solid 30+ it starts to drop. Other than that a very solid app, highly recommended.

Seems like a solid app so far. I have yet to start any conversations, but I plan to soon. Free version has basic, limited features, but premium plan is reasonably priced. I am thinking about upgrading to premium if I find myself using the app quite a bit. Good first impression. I really like the idea and the interface. I chose this platform over the other language exchanges due to large user base (10M+) and high rating.

Used to be a pretty cool app to make new friends but now theyve stripped away all good features into a premium monthly service. It went from one of the best language exchange apps to pay to play garbage. One of the best aspects was finding groups of people near you looking for exchanges and having meetups. Now its just random people from across the world that you have no connection with.

A well-made app. You can speak with native speakers of the language you are learning with both text and audio, post status updates, etc. My only complaint is the correction function. It's overly abused by its users to the extent that I (and possibly many others) often get discouraged from learning any more. I see people "correct" others incorrectly all the time (my native language is English), and it's made me wish I could hide corrections altogether.

Works very well, lacking stickers (unless I can't find the others) but the app is very fast and very simple to figure out. It's unfortunate that there isn't a word-for-word dictionary lookup, but perhaps that's something that can be added in the future. Edit: 7 years later, I've gotta lower my rating. The app is basically unusable is you don't pay. Everything you press leads you to the subscription screen. Nobody messages back anymore. Notifications don't seem to arrive on time or at all.

There are many features designed to help you learn your target language and interact with native speakers. Yes, sometimes you'll encounter rude people but it's easy to block them. Two things I don't like: It doesn't have a "dark mode" option. There should be a trial to use the upgraded version before committing to paying the exorbitant cost to buy it.

Edit: the issue has been resolved 👍 I am enjoying the app, talking and checking each others progress is great. Unfortunately, the "nearby" tab doesn't work and keeps giving "Can't get your location." I tried adjusting my phone's location settings, but that made no difference. The app recognizes my location and others as well, but for whatever reason, the "nearby" tab does not work. This is a huge letdown.

I've enjoyed using this app every day for a long time. However, the latest update seemingly removed location/country/city information from the "Connect" tab, which is how I've found all language partners so far and the most important feature to me. Now, the location can't be viewed unless each individual profile is tapped on, which makes the Connect tab useless to me. This is essentially the only reason I used this app and not Tandem. I'm not sure how long I'll continue if this change remains

I personally really like this app, and have learned quite a bit just within a couple days of having it, especially through corrections of my "moments" posts. Speaking of moments, I wish there was an option in moments to be able to post videos, as there's some clips of my hobbies I would like to share. If there is a way to post video clips and I just missed it, then this critique can be disregarded :)

Fun app to help learn languages. The vocabulary section for Vietnam is nice, but the audio clips are sped up in such an unnatural fashion. Being able to chat with native speakers is awesome, but it does require very regular socializing, which can be exhausting. Not being able to review words to keep a streak going sucks, because it's hard to fit in time for review when needing to cram for new words daily. Would love for the app to offer dark mode

Amazing so so far. Two things though; there are various modes that you have to pay for separately. If y'all could make a clear all inclusive payment it would be great. And (if all inclusive can happen) at least offer a monthly pay option for some of these separate modes, not just 6-12 months (around $100) options only. Still an absolutely great app!
