Missing critical Assistant features. Requires unlocking your phone to use ANY voice commands (assistant does not require this). Gemini as an AI product has been interesting, but ultimately I disabled it when they added a sound (the ring that Google previously used on Home/Nest devices to indicate it received your query and was preparing to respond). to every time Gemini dismissed itself (even if it didn't receive any inputs). I cannot figure out how to turn off that sound, so I disabled the app.

It needs to integrate with assistant asap, this is honestly a downgrade if I can't do simple things like opening an app or playing music by command - update, they did! I won't say it's perfect, but switching between assistant specific tasks and Gemini specific tasks are pretty seamless, and I think Gemini is going towards the right direction. I'm going to be using more to come to a better understanding of the full capacity of Gemini, but my biggest ick is resolved. Hurray!

Can't do things Google assistant could. Read the page was a basic function. Call a contact...basic. "Read the news" used to bring up a podcast-like screen with different news sources. Responds slower than Assistant did, and somewhat randomly requires a fingerprint unlock, even when the device is already unlocked (especially when unlocked by an approved Bluetooth device).

Still a shoddy, incomplete product. This really should have been a standalone app for AI-based features, rather than a horribly executed, crippled replacement for Assistant. Some of the search and summary features etc are nice, but not at the expense of everything else. This may eventually be good, but it's nowhere near that yet.

I hate the fact that I can't use both Google assistant AND gemini. From what I gather they are two completely different services, so I don't understand why I have to choose one or the other. I feel like they should be separate. They both have capabilities the other (mostly) doesn't have and it feels odd and inconvenient to have to sacrifice one app for the other when I need to use both??? If you guys can't find a way to add google assistant tasks to gemini, please make separate apps, at least.

This app doesn't actually do anything. Like literally nothing. You have the option to enable the "workspace" extension to access emails and things but enabling it doesn't actually allow it to access anything. To get a voice response, you need to manually tap the speaker icon, which makes it useless as a hands-free assistant. Also, bizarrely, it has no context window. It can't access any previous responses or questions to build context. This is literally just a shortcut to a single Google search.

Why oh why did you have to replace the assistant. This thing can't open YouTube like old assistant did or play music or set alarm. Basic things that you come to depend on. It should be a stand alone app. EDIT: it now has a setting to switch back to a more capable assistant! Hallelujah! The actual app and model is good enough compared to others. Missing link references though

I'm sure all of the generative AI things this can do are cool, however, it lacks a ton of basic functionality that assistant has. For instance. You can't tell it to play a song and have it start on a linked service, or tell it to navigate home and have it automatically open maps and start navigating for you. I'll wait until more features that I find useful are added to try it again.

I've been using it for 5 minutes and the user interface friendliness is subpar to say the least. I found other apps such as pi in which the interface allows you to speak to the AI or two high as I call her and then without hitting anything she responds and then gives you the opportunity to respond again without having to hit any buttons. needs to be hands-free.

Off to a great start but it needs to be more capable than assistant to replace assistant. I look forward to switching to this completely but it's missing commonly used features such as creating a calendar event, adding items to my shopping list, and playing the news (podcasts). I would only continue to pay for pro after my trial ends if it has all the features Assistant has. Will drop back to a lower priced Google One tier until these features are added. Edit - trial ended, I'm out! 5/14/24

Pretty good. A few downsides are: you can't use the app unless you switch from Google Assistant as your digital assistant to Gemini; you can't use it while your phone is locked; and it uses media volume to respond instead of the Bixby/Assistant volume slider like Google Assistant does. A pro is it doesn't take long to switch from GA to Gemini and back, but I would prefer if I didn't have to. When it can do all the things GA can and uses the assistant volume slider, I will change it to 5 stars.

Gemini is getting better, and it does fine telling you what to text to your friends because you can't be bothered to actually do it yourself. Can it set alarms, though, or look up directions or turn off your lights or play music for you? Absolutely not. And why should it?! It's just a language model! ...except it must replace Assistant as your "AI Assistant". But it's not an Assistant; it's just a language model...and it's not particularly good at that. ...unless you need it to text.

Seems ok at first. Immediately asks for a 5 star rating. Okay? As I tried to use it more and more it does well at some things like identifying what I am listening to or watching, but then it also can't change the brightness of my smart lights when asked, I don't trust it with alarms, every single inquiry automatically pulls you into their app instead of just answering a simple question like what time is it from the overlay view. There are no voice customisation options. Basically, it's a beta.

at launch I was impressed with Gemini Advanced. It had a different feel that helped distinguish it from the others. To me, it seemed quite unfiltered with less censorship and really intuitive answers. however, that seemed to sharply change in the first few updates. The first update made it feel Very handicapped and the next like it was balancing itself back out. And landed somewhere in the middle with caution & cutback capabilities. My guess is most Free trial participants won't renew just yet.

As a generative AI app, this really should not require swapping with Google Assistant as they share almost no feature set currently. Gemini is planned to eventually replace Assistant, but in its current form it will reduce your ability to interact with your phone as well as any smart devices. If it didn't require swapping, it might be nice to be able to use to test it out, but I'm not going to switch every time and agree to the terms every time.

for free it's pretty good, i like the button to verify it's answers. i wish though it could do the basic everyday stuff assistant could do though, like set reminders, update calendar, interact with smart home devices. not having that makes it obnoxious since instead of just having two assistant apps you can use simultaneously you're arbitrarily forcing us to pick one.

Worst part is the fact that I can't use it with Spotify. It was cool whe I first started using it, but the main thing I depended on with the Google Assistant is being able to start, stop, skip, and like songs on Spotify. Moving to Gemini caused me to lose all that integration. I know they are slowly starting to add it and when it does, maybe I'll fully switch. For now, I'll stick with the Google Assistant. It can easily do Navigation, Web Query's, and has Spotify Integration.

I have been spending some time with gemini advanced after receiving a free trial. It is terrible and is behind other AI and language models. I would rate it as a Minimally Viable Product. It fails in three major places. 1st almost every request it claims it can not help with. As soon as you insist, it suddenly completes your request. It argues a lot that it can't do tasks google claims it can. 2nd it has bad memory. You ask it to complete a task from it's last response it doesn't know. 500 char

While interesting technology and it's nice that it can answer general questions much better than Google assistant, the lack of tailored responses is felt very quickly. For example, instead of "Can you hear me" being answered with a simple "loud and clear!" It proceeds to go on a 5 sentence tangent about how it obviously doesn't have ears. Yawn.

Not bad, but listening can be improved. Also, when I use the dictation feature, it'll capture all of my words (some wrong, of course), but then everything that was said would disappear. I've done this 3x, where I would talk for at least 25 sec, and it would write the words down, but then as soon as you pause (like you're thinking of a word), it'll delete everything. Frustrating when you're trying to have a natural dialogue with AI.
