Overall, I like it. I played this on the NES back in the day. It was called Dragon Warrior then, I think. Was my first rpg and I was hooked. I've not played this through yet but it seems faithful to the story. I know the dialogue is updated and the sound track is remastered. The graphics are updated as well but it's not distracting until you look up the original. 4 stars instead of 5 because I'd love to see the option to toggle between updated and original features.

Features and functions stayed true to the original for the most part (key difference was tiles or important items on the ground sparkled). The only item to call out is that compared to the original NES game you level up SUPER fast. Monsters give a lot more gold and XP. This removes a lot of the monotony and tedium of just grinding out levels or gold, but also I think I finished from start to end in ~8 hours or so.

I started with dragon quest builders and the story is witty and charming enough to make me want more, so I decided to start at the beginning. This game was much shorter than I thought but the length was perfect for the story I think. There were a few jokes but mostly oh no, please kill the dragon lord! Beat the game at lvl 21 and got to take the princess and probly bang her.

Surprisngly strong port. The simplicity of the game allows for excellent controls and an experience significantly more satisfying (and somehow less grindy) than your average mobile game. Great experience at a great price, just don't be afraid to look something up. This game came with a Nintendo Power subscription for a reason. (Keep in mind this uses the Gameboy Color dungeon layouts)

Know what you're getting into, this game has some very dated and annoying design choices... But it birthed an entire genre and is still easy enough to play and get into to this day. I wouldn't recommend this as anyone's first dragon quest game unless they're in it for the retro appeal, but if you're curious about where the series started this is a good version.

This is one of few games I would actually recommend the mobile version of - there's no complex story to remember, and the game is so mechanically simple you can whiz through grinding sections on a subway and it feels like nothing. Grinding this way makes the game much more manageable, to the point it's the definitive version of DQ1. Sadly, the in-game menus are ugly and the overworld graphics look off in a strange way. Great game, perfect for mobile, but as a port and an app, it could be better.

I loved the original dragon warrior game. This mobile version is similar and adds a lot of quality of life improvements such as saving anywhere any time, adding a bank to store useless items, and a few others. My only complaint is that the game is way easier than the original game was. I easily beat the game at level 19. There is overpowered treasure in all the caves. And gold golems give 650 gold. Certain quest mobs give thousands of xp. Basically little grinding needed and done at level 19

I am 33 years old. I have never played Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy games. I was a hardcore gamer as a youth, but never got into RPG's and don't play anything anymore. I finished the book I was reading and wanted an adventure I could play through and did some research and ended up playing through DQ1. I just finished the game and it did not disappoint. It was challenging, but not overly so. Loved it being completely in portrait.

Best gaming experience on mobile so far. The game works great on my phone and never crashed once. This was my first Dragon Quest game and it was great for the price. The story and game play is simple but so much fun. This is JRPG at its roots. Try beating it without a guide for the ultimate rewarding feeling. Regardless, be sure to quick save OFTEN! Don't want to lose your progress!

This is Dragon Quest 1 in its best form. For those complaining about the controls, it's likely that they haven't noticed you can move your character from anywhere. Swipe up and hold, and you move up. Move your finger down, relative to that and you'll walk down. This is a game PERFECT for phones and optimized for it. And no, there's no controller support for a game that's played in portrait mode where the only actions are tapping and swiping.

This is a port of the SNES remake of Dragon Quest (Warrior) and thus is much easier than the original NES version. Random battles happen very infrequently and there is no need to randomly search areas while exploring as any hidden items either glow on the ground or an exclamation point (!) will appear above the hero's head to alert you. Graphics are nice, controls are OK, music is OST but no option for original 8/16 bit BGM, and runs OK. The biggest downside is the game is portrait mode only.

First off, let me just say the touch controls work perfectly. Played through the whole game and at no point were they a hindrance. The game itself is a fun RPG. Didn't play the NES original so I can't speak to changes or refinements (although I think they may have renamed a few spells). They included a quick save option so you don't have to go back to the king to save every time. Relatively simple and not incredibly long, but a fun game all around (and you can't beat the price).

This was my first time ever playing this game and it was good and fun overall. Controls worked well and the interface was simple. Portrait mode and quick save made it easy to play whenever. The main downside is how short it is, I definitely expected more. It's also an old rpg so don't expect much direction, character development, unique story lines, or strategy. But if you're looking to play a classic, retro rpg then it's worth the few bucks.

Loved this game on the NES and this is a very good port. So many people dislike the controls, but they worked great for me. There's also few layout options, so no worries. Portrait (as this game is) vs landscape is another thing other reviewers complain about. Either way works for me, so this is another non-issue. It's old school, so there's a bit of grinding and you HAVE to talk to everyone (and remember what is said!). Overall, highly recommend if you're into old school, turn based rpg's.

Like for many of you it's easier nowadays to find time to play cell phone games 😐. This was my second Dragon Quest 🐲download, and I decided to take it to where it all began for ol' times sake. It is indeed a quick game compared to the other installments hence the four ⭐ rating, but there are nice upgrades from the NES original: WHAT'S NEW >an orchestral sound, >a coin bank, >Quick saves which makes the trip back to the castle unnecessary. There also wasn't a "puff-puff" offer 🙀 back in the original Dragon Warrior from what I can remember. Unlike what another reviewer said, you DON'T NEED WIFI to play. This is a cheap buy and a good way to break into the series. Stay safe in the real world, fellow dragon warriors.

The original adventure that started it all for console RPGs. This is an amazing port from Square Enix and it has optimized controls and feels good to pick up and play. It is a relatively short title (It can literally be completed in a day.), however the bulk of your time will be spent grinding power and looking for clues to defeat the dreaded Dragonlord. This is an excellent game for RPG beginners and those looking to get into the franchise in general. Give it a go!

I first got addicted to the Dragon Quest games with VIII on the Wii. I had been trying to find the first one for years, so I was pretty stoked to see this one. Alas, as others have stated, the menu button doesn't function, you just move right :'( Update; It's fixed and perfect! Thank you for my happy place!

I have many fond memories of playing this game on the NES so it's awesome that you can get much of the original experience in a mobile app. First off, this game just works: no ads, no account to set up. You start the game and play from start to finish. The controls have some nice quality of life improvements over the original. The dialogue is in a take middle English style true to the original, and its otherwise a joyfully simple RPG.

I've never played the dragon quest series, this was my first playthrough. Just a game I decided to get while traveling. Simple turn based dungeon crawler. Similar to final fantasy games . Not too much thought into the gear, story was simple. I've beat the game and gone on to DQ2 which is this game, improved and story continued. Looking forward to playing all the games.

nostalgia trip! I saw this on the app store and was gripped with indecision over if I should buy it or not. but then I remembered a young princess once said to me, "but thou must!" and who am I to deny princess Gwaelin? The remake is pretty, but just like the original, it's a short game. I'm not a fan of the clunky controls, or no return except to the castle, but I guess they wanted to keep those canon annoyances intact. at least they added quick-save. little QoL things would be great.
