I have been listening to the bbc since the 70s when it broadcast over SW, then FM in various countries, then on laptop, and now on a phone. The new app is the opposite of progress: 1. it is bloated, it takes 5 clicks and scrolling to listen. 2. loads slow and damningly the stream breaks, consistently. 3. it wants a username. On a phone it could save settings, and surely it could track phone id. Congrats it has weaned me off the BBC in the backround I had for 50 yrs!

Used to be easy to use but notifications have been broken for quite some time. Tapping a notification article dumps you onto a page filled with headlines and rarely brings you to the actual article. Who has time to hunt around like that? in addition, with a recent update the app tries to load for 30 seconds and then claims there's no internet connection which is of course not the case. uninstall reinstall does not resolve issue. since it doesn't work I can't even give it 2 stars.

Please revert the update and go back to the drawing board. Clearly, the update is very poorly received and has ruined everyone's experience with the app. I had depended on this app almost daily for a decade for my news, now it is almost unusable. My saved news topics have disappeared, and there's no way to set them again, and it is more difficult to read through the headlines. Update: After another update, the app is absolutely useless. It's just the website. Uninstalling after 10+ years.

The new app is horrible. Never stays loaded in memory so its way slower to start up. Have to wait through the splash screen and login page every time I go to the app. The new layout is horrible. No more "popular" page which is the main page I used. The new home page is a mess. Looks cluttered and difficult to navigate. Really disappointing as I like BBC but I'll have to find another app.

It's kind of amazing how some moron gets a promotion for taking something that's already good, and just changing it instead of making it better. Gone from red to black? That's worth all the bugs and issues? It's certainly not better. Save, share, and other navigation buttons don't work. There are just lines of microscopic text now. Before a "redesign", maybe ask, "is this any better, or just different?" before you release something

I've been relying on the BBC news app to get the best unbiased US news for over a decade and I guess I need to find a new source because the new update may have tried to make it look new and trendy but it's really just incredibly busy to the point of being visually overwhelming. They took nice organized categories and just threw everything together. Also the double ask to get an account whenever I open it is a huge turn off. Very, very disappointed.

BBC was one of my top news apps. But then they got rid of great stuff like my news. That was bad enough but then as of the most recent updates reminds up to sign up for a free account everytime the app is opened. Every. Single. Time. Sure I can skip it by pressing the option below. But the reminder and the step required to skip happens every single time. Every. Single. Time. If the forced reminder does not go away I am just going to uninstall the app. Stop trying to make us sign up for stuff!

Not sure how the app can get any worse at this point with this new upstate. The user friendliness is gone. Prompted to make an account every time I want to read an article. No option to prevent rotation on screen (reading in bed on my side) from happening. Severely disappointed in what is good news being stuck behind such a pitiful app.

The new app redesign is failing to completly load for me, it shows the splash screen then goes to a white screen with a yellow triangle and exclamation mark. I submitted a bug report on April 10th for this issue and have not yet heard anything back. Today I was forced to upgrade from the old working app version so here I am, now unable to use any version of the BBC News apps.

BBC continues to deliver quality reporting and content for its app, but the notifications have taken a step backward. It appears to be impossible now to differentiate true Breaking News alerts from non-breaking news notifications. As such, I'm awakened at 3AM by feature stories which are not urgent in the least. I've attempted to remedy this by setting notification categories -- but all news alerts, breaking or otherwise, seem to simply be sent now as "notifications" in the Android settings.

I've used this app for years without issue. Now it keeps pushing for login information. I'm guessing, so you can sell our information? The additional ad space you are using isn't enough? The app periodically won't scroll to be able to read the whole story or a full screen ad forces you back to the home screen. BBC needs to look at putting some new people in charge of app development... It just keeps getting worse. There's a lot better apps out there now, I'd suggest using them.

Occasionally wont show videos in my area, due to licensing restrictions? Overall a reliable and informative news app. As of May 2024, after an automated phone software upgrade, BBC app instantly crashes when you click on a video to play. Does not happen on other news apps. Some incompatibility with latest Android version? Otherwise still a good app

Recent updates have broken the user experience. You could previously zoom in on images within an article. This was essential to read graphs and plots accompanying certain pieces. This is no longer possible and very infuriating. What's the point of including charts and other graphics on mobile if no one can read them?

The quality of the news itself is impeccable. But since the update a few months ago this went from one of my favorite news apps to least favorite. The 'My News' feature was helpful for following certain topics and should be brought back. It should be easier for me to see new news about specific topics and also follow certain writers.

Lots of problems with the new app. First, the option to download top articles has been removed. Second, links invariably fail to open the linked article on the app, either redirects me to the home page or throws up an error message. Also, no way to turn off auto rotate, even if it's turned off on the phone. Lastly, the headline widget has unfortunately been removed. Quality of reporting is still generally good, even if editorialising/slant has notably increased at cost of depth/balance.

Was a fantastic app to learn about world news and a different view of US news. With this update though the app itself is a horrendous experience. My main sticking point is that it constantly asks for login information every single time you open it up. When clicking on an external link that opens the app, you also get the login in screen and once you click past it the article itself never loads. Just that spinning circle of doom. Please change it back, I'm begging you

You completely ruined the app. Of the many, MANY issues people have previously brought up in reviews probably the most infuriating to me is how often BBC will send me a head line, I click on the notification and then am taken to a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ARTICLE! Even worse, half the time it's as though the article never existed in the first place! This app use to be great, I don't know what imbecile thought these changes would be in any way beneficial. It's a real shame. 👎

Last major update ruined the app. Roll back the major update, or better yet, rollback yep major updates as that one was the clearest. Many already outlined major problems and I'll add: app crashes on many videos, or fails to play others. Yet some videos play. Layout is bad - search box misaligned and cuts off text. Can't select text to copy or look up a word. Nah splash is annoying. 5 Stars for journalism minus 2 starts for horrible update. Will re-review if problems get fixed fast.

The changes they have made in the last few months make it time to switch. It seems like the news selections are filtered now. There are maybe 30 stories, whereas in the old app there seemed to be hundreds. I switch apps to find other AP news I'm interested in that I'm sure bbc wrote on. They removed the ability to zoom into pictures which makes it impossible to see details and I can no longer copy words to paste into Google to get more info. I can do this in other apps. Changes unacceptable.

This was my favorite news app for over a decade. It's where I went to get my my unbiased us news. As others have stated, the major overhaul to this app has been overwhelmingly terrible. Articles are more difficult to find, the app constantly crashes, and the design layout is terrible. I don't want to change news apps, but I will unless they get rid of this new overhaul and go back to the old design soon.
