The winner of my language app battle. Paid for six months. This app just has everything I want. Practical material but without ditching attention to grammar. Great community features for learning with others. Several different exercises for speaking, writing, reading, etc. while still being structured in a predictable way. Most of all, it doesn't feel like it's trying to be a game!

I really did NOT like this app.1) it make you purchase up front before you try it, now I wasted payment 2) it focused too much on the various word tenses and masculine vs feminine instead learning words 3) it was hard to navigate back to repeat lessons 4) I could not find a list of vocabulary words I had learned. I am doing much better with Duolingo app for my purposes

The lessons are well-structured, but there is way too much reliance on a badly-functioning audio detection feature. I don't mind that occasionally it might count a wrong answer as correct because I can see text after giving an answer and check my own error, but it is tremendously annoying (and discourages learning) when you keep saying the same correct answer over and over again, mixing the intonations up a bit in the hopes it might count one right, and it repeatedly counts it as wrong.

A waste of $$, and a frustrating experience for the would-be tourist, not looking for a job or date. IMHO, a fairly problematic app. I remain unimpressed as it is slow and often refuses to "hear" even the simplest spoken words and seems super-sensitive to any background noise. Lots of focus on work and related relationships, handy, I suppose, if planning to work there. Médiocre value, I wish I'd picked a different app instead of babbel. I will not be extending my initial subscription. Bah!

The lessons are well thought out and effective. I would like to follow my friends' progress, because that makes learning more fun. Add that and this is an easy 4 stars. I'm not sure what's going on, but when I look at the "how are you" badge in achievements, it shows that the section has been completed, but when I click on it, it says that I've only completed 1 of 9 lessons. I've definitely completed all 9. Similar with other achievements.

I'm really enjoying this and can't wait to get more in-depth. This is a refresher for me. My French has gotten quite rusty. One slight criticism is that the app seems to mark some of my recordings as incorrect at random times. Yesterday, literally everyone was marked as being wrong, but today, they are all correct. At least this isn't being graded. Adding: I wish there was a way to just bypass the recording portions. It just isn't reliable, at all. Otherwise, a good program.

Love this! It's not competitive like Duolingo, and it's lobly focused on your learning, which you can do in numerous ways! It has so many activities, games, and cultural information. It provides context to what you learn as well! My only complaint is the self-report of your progress, I feel like a mini test or something as a measure with a line graph might be better.

The voice recognition sucks. I can exactly repeat a phrase or word & it constantly tells me I'm wrong. Even simple French words like je and tu. Makes the app extremely frustrating. It almost makes the app worthless. Reading the reviews, I'm not the only one with this problem. This is obviously an issue. When will it be fixed? Update: The issue continues to get worse. It's not just simple single syllable words, now even longer multi word phrases have the same problem. The app is almost useless.

It's great if you like learning in more of a linear, formal way, it's very similar to how I was taught in school (to learn the basics and build on that.) It's a little boring in its template tho. I use Duolingo too and it sucks me in because it's like a game, but it seems to focus on immersion learning with few to no explainations. If you want a school-like learning experience, Babble is the better option.

The lessons are great. It helps you progress at a good pace without overwhelming you. I used it for 6 months before a trip to Italy and was able to speak well enough to make due. Only 3 stars because the app is extremely buggy. It crashes constantly often in the middle of lessons. As others have mentioned, the voice recognition doesn't work at all so the Speaking Lessons are totally useless. It's been like this for years so it doesn't seem like the company has any intention of fixing these bugs.

Was really good for a year or so. It does a much better job at explaining certain things than most other apps. But for the past three months the microphone has just been messing up. My voice answers take forever to register, and it causes the lessons to take 4 times longer, just because of the loading. And that's if it actually works. Not a phone issue either, my phone mic works everywhere else. Hoping for a fix soon. I liked the lessons because they were quick, but now they take forever.

They only gloss over sentence structure and that's the meat of languages. And, you need to be VERY well versed in English grammar rules and terms or you won't even understand what they're talking about. I'm very sorry now that I paid for a lifetime subscription. Plus, each exercise is agonizingly slow. You type in the answer and have to wait, you go to the next item and you have to wait, etc. Update: I tried again and it's still absolutely horrible.

The lessons are actually great, but the speaking parts just seem to be getting worse. The microphone will glitch out or give you credit for wrong answers. It seems to get worse with each update. If babbel would finally fix this it would be 5 stars no problem, but it's frustrating they still have not fixed this after 2 years. I've tried on different devices and with headphones, and same issues so it's definitely the app.

I'm running android 14 on a pixel 7 phone and the speaking/microphone portion of the lessons are absolutely horrible. Most times I have to hit the mic button several times for the app to start listening, and then when it is finally activated and listening, it does not recognize me talking most of the time. I've tried with and without my earbuds and it makes no difference. This is really a deal breaker in becoming fluent with speaking if I cannot properly use this feature. I'm super frustrated.

Babbel has a better combination of listening, conversational practice, and direct grammar (instruction and drills) than other popular options that I have tried. Examples and conversations are realistic and relevant. Challenges to stretch learners beyond their current knowledge are reasonable rather than discouraging. App updates have resulted in an attractive space and a pleasant, straightforward user experience. Thank you for a truly helpful product, Babbel team!

Good, but not great. The lessons are quite comprehensive and really seek to give the user an understanding of the grammar involved in the language they are learning. Unfortunately, it is severely lacking in the repetition needed to really make the lessons stick home. There are only about 10-15 review questions offered to be able to do every day and it simply isn't enough to commit everything to memory. I have found that duolingo is better practice if you need repetition as I do.

I've used pretty much every language app, and this is definitely one of my favorites. It has just a few things that can be improved. 1. The speech recognition is buggy, at least on my device. I usually have to turn off speaking exercises. 2. The font used in selection buttons, such as when you're spelling a word from provided letters, is difficult to read. Not dyslexia or astigmatism friendly. Other fonts are fine.

I had to buy a subscription to check out the app. Np problem, given what they advertised, it appeared that this would be good for me as an advanced Spanish language learner looking to brush up on vocab. I subscribed, logged in, and absolutely nothing. All beginner courses, no intermediate nor advanced. Absolute waste of time and money. I canceled the subscription immediately. If you want to learn past beginner status, stick with Duolingo because this app won't take you very far.

Structured in a way that you can really see the progress. Not gamified. UPDATE: Taking a couple stars away. This new interface is not my favorite. Specifically, Babbel dropping the review number that would pop up every day. Sounds dumb, but it was another way to keep motivated. Also, worse yet, microphone now takes FOREVER to register and allow you to use it. Activities and reviews take three times as long now. Update 2: app is back and mostly working as well as it used to.

I have tried many language apps, but this one is the best hands down. many options for learning, accurate pronunciations (of Dutch at least), and great explanations of words, grammar, and even culture! **Update 5/2024 - used to love this app, but it's become impossible to use the voice function. My Dutch speaking partner even tries the words and it fails him. No matter what, it never registers what you are saying. They've done some very poor un-improvements to the voice and speaking function**
