The essential features of the app (checking your balance & transactions, making payments, managing your card(s), etc) work well. It's simple to navigate, fingerprint login works well, & notifications can be customized. However, I find it very annoying that selecting membership benefits opens your browser to their website, which is frustratingly bloated & slow on phones (the site works fine on computers/laptops, but I don't always have one available, especially if I'm traveling).

When dealing with credit, this app should be way more detailed. Especially when there is multiple credit lines. I have no idea if I'm paying off my balance & interest or the balance & interest of a family member. It would be nice if there was a clear difference. For example "April used 100 of the credit line. Shes accrued $25 of interest to this date" etc etc. It needs more details. This is so confusing it makes me not want to use this credit card.

The current balance is not included below each transaction, making it extremely difficult to track how much you've charged. Other apps I've used such as Bank of America keep a running total balance next to each transaction, so if you like to pay off your total balance, then you can see what pending charges aren't being included in that payment. Without that transparency, it is incredibly frustrating to pay off total balance and have that balance spike back up when the pending charges post.

Very Confusing! AmEx tries to cram way to much stuff into the App, which causes it to be overwhelming for the user. You'll be clicking on areas where you never want to go and good luck getting back before getting locked out. Then, you'll find yourself having to call their customer service to let you back in, only to repeat the process. AmEx is great. The App, (This App), BAD.

I have been with American Express since 1991 and have had very positive experiences until the last app update, which is an absolute abomination!!! The app does not function correctly and the option to "pay other amount" does not work!! After so many complaints by customers I cannot understand why the application issues have not been resolved. You would think that American Express has highly qualified IT Technicians on staff to resolve these type issues. Apparently not. Very disappointing!!

Kicks us off every few minutes. Screen size/font tiny and unusable. When you try to zoom in to tap the extremely small buttons, you end up accidentally touching another button. App restarts/resets itself often when we are trying to buy travel products. Wont let us purchase any hotel/flight combo. My dad is the best businessman I know. He always said "don't make it difficult for your customers to give you money". Amex has blown it. Both the iPhone and Android platforms are equally horrible.

I think the app is simple and it works well. The biggest issue I have is that on any purchases over $100, I have no option to just 'pay it's. Being able to plan it is great, but that's for a fee. Sometimes, I pay on the card just to pay it all off later (groceries for example). It would be great to have a 'pay it's option on every purchase. It is doable since they allow other options to split it or plan it.

1. Suddenly, after several years of using this app, I'm unable to attach receipts from my phone's files. I get an error message telling me to enable permissions for files access. And guess what. There's no provisions for granting access. 2. I used to be able to upload receipts while transactions were still pending. Now I have to wait several days. 3. I was once able to preview receipts upon posting by way of a thumbnail. Now I have to manually open each transaction, line by line, to check

Ever since the switch to the business app, I can't add notes to transactions anymore and now no matter what I try, the app says it doesn't have access granted to my files so I can no longer upload receipts. I've gone in and manually granted the app access to my camera roll in my phones settings, it still doesn't work! I NEED to be able to do these two tasks for work or I will experience consequences from my employer. And the website is slow & difficult to navigate. Get it together AmEx!!!!!

This app is very practical and usually reliable. But there is one annoying flaw. Each time the app is updated, it "forgets" my settings for Spending Alerts (which I turned on) forcing me to manually reset that feature. Why does it automatically turn off an important feature like that with each update? Please correct this issue and I would change my rating to 5 stars.

It's really annoying that we can no longer use the "other amount" I contacted customer service, but after reading the reviews I now know that it's not just me. I use my Amex for EVERYTHING mainly because of the points and the fact that It easier to keep track of my budgeting and spending with the app. But now that I can no longer pay the "other" amount, the ease and convenience is no longer there. I hope it's fixed soon!

The app itself works great. However, I'm leaning more and more towards it being rigged to encourage late payment and up the interest. Notifications absolutely suck. Would you like it to remind you of a payment date? You can have it notify at 3 day till all the way up to 10 days till due date. Not the day before. Not the day of. You can't even get notification for more than one option. If you accidently dismiss it, that's it. Hope you saw it. IF IT COMES AT ALL. Trash. Don't use amex.

I have two amex accounts - my personal and the work/corporate one. The app does not allow you to be logged into both at the same time. Fine, then I'll just switch between them. Android will remember the passwords for me. But the app even refuses to do that! Once one account is setup, if you want to login to a second one it will entirely remove the first one from the phone. Useless for me. Uninstalled the app....

I have just downgraded this app from four stars of a few yeas ago. That's an unusual response from me, as I view AmEx as a consistent leader in the industry of making easily useable features on their website & app. What is frustrating to me, is that I have three AmEx cards, & navigating between them with this app, means I have to remember what some hotshot programmed as the tap or swipe to switch to a different card. What's wrong with a simple menu, like computers have used for decades??? I don't use the app five times a day & don't remember what the trick is to consistently switch to a different card. After a few futile swipes & taps I'm able to switch cards, but it's not very user-friendly.

2/23/23-downgrade to 3 🌟 😕. Updated and purchase notification didn't come through until I opened the app, and it came 3 times! 7/31/15-They completely changed it! Design used to look slick. Now looks terrible! Interface is now clunky and hard to navigate. Removed certain functions. Confusing and hard to find what you want. Sad that a team of professionals thought this was necessary. Do yourself a favor and don't update if you liked the previous version!! You've been warned!

There are many things to be improved, first intelligibility. When you click on transactions, it will only show part of them. You have to go back and select the billing cicle. This also happens on the website. Another important thing to improve is that app kicks you out after 30 seconds of inactivity, although it will display that you have been inactive for 5 minues. I am removing this app and wait for AMEX to provide answer and improve it. In the meantime I strongly recommend not to use it.

The App is a shadow of the website. Several functions can ONLY be done online. I can drain my savings account using the app, but I can't add another Amex account to my user. I can make multiple thousand dollar payments in the app, but I can't dispute a transaction. Then, when you contact them for help, they're rude and condescending. The guy I got first was horrible. I ended that session and tried again. She was better, but not much. AMEX charges hundreds a year to use their cards. Not worth it

The app looks nice but it it clearly designed to encourage late payments a very confusing way to find how much you own for your current balance, and if you have multiple accounts with the same card the way they combine them, I feel like it should be different. They should make it more like the capital one app interface, it's nice, clear and efficient. They way they do cash back is also annoying they should learn a thing or two from capital one.

It's a credit card app. It works. The UI might not be as straightforward as the designers (or worse, the suits) might think tho. The sole reason I'm Leaving a review is a hilarious, yet sad feature (or bug) of the app. I was reading the clauses and agreement to sign up for split pay and the app kicks me out for inactivity. I was slowly scrolling. So, I suppose when reading docs in app, it doesnt register movement.

Mostly just opens a browser and takes you to the website. On top of that, very poor IDM/SSO session management. You have to login multiple times and sessions constantly expire. Why have the app, just go to the website on your browser...it's actually easier that way. 6 years later and still the same issues! What a terrible company and app.
