More About Spot the Station

For anyone who has ever gazed up at the night sky and wondered about the mysteries of the universe, witnessing the ISS pass overhead can be an awe-inspiring moment. The Spot the Station mobile app is designed to notify users when the International Space Station (ISS) is visible overhead from their location. It aims to broaden access and awareness of the ISS and NASA globally, by providing users with an opportunity to experience the wonder of the ISS firsthand. The realization that there are human beings living and working in that tiny dot, orbiting the Earth at a mind-boggling speed of 17,500 miles per hour, is breathtaking. The app includes several helpful features including: 1. 2D & 3D real-time location views of the ISS 2. Upcoming Sighting Lists with visibility data 3. Augmented Reality (AR) view with compass and trajectory lines embedded into the camera view 4. Up-to-date NASA ISS Resources & Blog 5. Privacy Settings 6. Push Notifications when the ISS is approaching your location

I've been trying to use it for a couple of months, when I unlock the phone I get messages about the station been rising in 15 minutes or now, I open the app and it shows the ISS in another part of the world and tells it will be visible in 20 hours or more, it seems like I should set my own alarm to go out and spot the station.

I gave this a one star because upon release it crashed and quit on my Pixel 7 Pro. The app's now been tweaked/updated and looks pretty good. Cool to get the notification to get ready (15 mins) and another that it should be in view. The overlaid track on a real outdoor view (augmented reality) helps to locate it. A sixth star when you can get rid of the clouds. Thanks Developer and NASA!

A very useful ap. If you enjoy Space exploration & want to see where & when our I.S.S. is within view, get this ap. See the station in the sky. I recommend using binoculars ,compass, for easy viewing. Use & Learn where "true" North is , vs magnetic North & you're good to go! If eyeballing without visual aids, ISS appears as a swift moving pinpoint. You'll get a text with coordinates & time. Use this ap in conjunction with the NASA ap. Love OUR Earth, Spaceforce & Universe. 👍

Great app with some excellent features and graphics. I have found that it isn't always accurate with regards to time. Sightings seem to vary +/- 4 minutes. Also, the app has sent false alarms severally and on consecutive days about sightings when the ISS isn't visible.

Since my first review, I've updated to a Pixel 8. The updated app version, v1.2.1, doesn't crash now, which is nice. Initially, it refused to detect my location automatically, just spun forever. The manual location input box doesn't work either. *However*, after the developers responded to my review (thanks, I appreciate that), I've tried again and it now all works ! A server issue, perhaps ? Can now start playing 👍 Prior to v1.2.1 : Sounds great. Immediately crashes on my Pixel 7.

Great app, nice for people enthusiastic about space. One major flaw though; the icons at the bottom of "Tracker" are nearly impossible to see because of them being white and also being above Antarctica. A solution would be to add a small black outline around them, or make the text/image inside of them inverse of the color behind them.

Updated review 16 Nov 23: Now that the location detection has been fixed, it works well. Quick to load, easy to use and looks good. Could be improved by: 1. Being able to set finer time detail to filter the forecast sightings. Eg morning vs evening. 2. It only shows the next 9 sightings. Many more would be better so as to see when the next useful one is.

I love this app! It's an amazing experience to get to see the ISS passing by. It's wild how close/big it looks! It's just the coolest thing ever!!!

A really great app by NASA for spotting the ISS. Didn't really expect that NASA that would make an app to spot the ISS. The app is really good in itself. It has a really great UI and it is ad-free unlike most of the other space station spotting apps which have a lot of ads. It doesn't really have much issues but sometimes I have trouble in clicking the next sightings list button. It just doesn't respond. Hope NASA fixes the bug. Otherwise a really great app. Good job NASA.

App functions well but does cause an erroneous error message with Norton antivirus. The air is a security setting in Norton and does not affect the running of the app. The app runs fine.

everything about this app is wonderful, except the notifications. the past couple days, I would get a notification several minutes after the ISS passes, despite setting it to notify me 15 minutes before.

Very cool app, but I consistently get notifications for the space station 15-20min AFTER it's already passed by. Any idea how to fix this?

Has the basic features down, but you can only show your current location on a map and not a custom one. You can still get notified when custom locations will have a good view of it.

Complete Fail. Station passed almost directly overhead today and I missed it because that pass was not even listed in the app. The app listed a later pass where the station was close to the horizon, but completely missed the station passing overhead.

It doesn't work. I installed it and it makes you out in your location before moving on. You can have them detect your location or you can put your location in. Neither one of these options actually work. So you can't get past that screen. You'd think NASA of all places would make a decent app at the very least..

I use the website frequently. Like the convenience of the app but the display and notifications could use some tweaking. My notifications are set for 15 min before but it goes off 30 min before. There should be more notification options ... like 5 minutes before. Would be helpful if the Home screen displayed the exact time of the current flyover rather than a countdown to the next flyover.

NASA geniuses developed this free and ad-free app, and it honestly rocks if you're an astronomy and technology junkie like myself. It not only shows the path of the ISS, but has a great augmented reality function to see that, too! It'll send you an alert when the station is about to be seen from your area if you choose, and there's a wealth of interesting links to other NASA activities! Highly recommended, and a lot of fun! You can even take pics of the station through the app!

Honestly 1 start is a bit much. I didn't want to give any stars because I have no idea how good it actually is. I couldn't ever get passed the "detecting your location" screen in set up. Even after clearing the cache/storage. Definitely wish it would work so I could start to get my daughter interested in space with me. Hopefully eventually all the kinks are worked out and we can try again. Update: Reinstalled and finished set up. Can't wait to run outside in 12 hours and see it overhead!

The notifications are late. Seems this app is a waste of space. (lol.....get it?) But, in all seriousness, I have yet to recieve a notification of the station passing prior to the station actually passing, by no less than 15-20 minutes. I recommend setting your own alarms/timers using the times for your location in the app as reference, or don't install the app if you expect it to work as the developer describes.

Update 11/15: I just updated to 5 stars. Thank you developers for adopting a fix. I was able to install, take the nice introduction tour of the app, and location was precise!! NASA!! You can't make an app that can detect my location without crashing? I've installed it twice, I'm not doing it again... Too bad bc I'm very interested in seeing the station... And the tool bag floating a few minutes behind.
